I've held on to it for 9 years. Used it for a little web biz to put myself through college. I haven't ever considered selling, but someone inquired recently -- that made me realize there could be some value to it. The site there is horrid, and I haven't touched it in at least 5 years -- please ignore the mess.

Any ideas? I see a broad potential for branding, almost anything could use it. Business/software site maybe? It was originally picked as an Aggie theme (maroon is the school color for Texas A&M University).

Yes, great potential here! Big corporations love to brand themselves with colors and they make for excellent names!

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about develoment at that stage. Some names are strong enough to stand on their own. Any buyer that will desire a name like this enough to pay what its worth wouldn't be concerned with getting a developed site with it. But if you are starting a business anyhow, it would make for a great name.

But then i talked to him about the idea of a bid war between A&M and UT fans... could possibly turn to an honor thing (like savetoby). Some rich AGGIE or rich longhorn would want it.

Thanks for the replies -- a lot of interesting and helpful info there.

I'm in no hurry to sell, since I figure the name will appreciate over time. As far as corporate branding, RJ has a good point about corporations branding with color. Think Blue (IBM), Brown (UPS), Yellow (trucking). Granted, though they companies brand with those colors, they do not have the color.com names. Bet they would have liked to own them.

I do have some stats running on the site, but I hadn't looked at them in _years_. A quick look this morning shows a little traffic.. about 5000 page views to the top page per month and 31k to all pages in the domain per month. I imagine this doesn't help/hinder the value much.

Overture ranks "maroon" at 17,932 for August. However, if you throw the Maroon 5 band-related searches, the frequenty is way over 200,000.

A quick google of maroon shows my site as #5 on the list. I think that may have value to a buyer -- they've automatically got some ranking.

I do have a potential end user interested in the name. But I don't want to talk dollars with him until I have a better feel -- I think RJ's got it right about corporate color branding. I'd rather be conservative and sit on it longer than sell too cheap and regret it.

Also, if I give it some time (and ignore this guy's interest), I can make the domain much more attractive to buyers.

It should go in the High x,xxx to low xx,xxx Range with little problem , But as you said - adding a newer/fresher site to it may Spark more interest. Good luck with this Great Name

Great Name, easily 25,000-35,000

Great brandable dot com, very rare. Put it up on Sedo or Aftenic and see what happens. Or for fun you could put it on ebay with a 1 dollar starting bid or a RESERVE like 30,000 or what ever you would like to get for it. This way, you could see what the bidding reaches at and this will generate some publicity for the domain.
