Marketing campaign for .fi

Greetings,

finnish domain name service Ficora will start 2 week campaign for marketing .fi domain name extension. Marketing campaign costs will be 100 000 euros. It is focudes to private finnish citizens. One purpose of the campaign is to fight against ICANN decision to release domain name extensions.

How do they plan on stopping ICANN? and stopping the countless companies and organizations that are lining up for their own TLD?

they have an uphill battle.

They'd meet better success trying to rebrand .FI as .FINANCE and letting anyone register a domain.

But it won't make a difference because it's possible that someone is going to submit an application to ICANN for .FINANCE next year.

Before you can register a .fi domain name you must either be a registered company in Finland or to have an office in Finland.

Even companies regged in the EU have to have an office in Finland.

I really can't see the point atm in a marketting campaign unless they open it up. Also .fi domains are still fairly expensive although this is changing soon.

I didn't mean that Ficora tries to fight against ICANN.

From my point of view Ficora tries to brand it's domain extension before it will have notable competitors. In future there can be for example .suomi (.finland) extension, which is direct competitor for Ficora's .fi extension.

.fi is abbreviation comes from the english word Finland, which isn't finnish even it is meant to be used a finnish citizens. It would make more sense if finnish extension would come from finnish word, not from english word.

If you buy domain from Ficora it cost 45€/3 year.
