Hi, I am pretty new to the world of domain values, and would appreciate some thoughts on the value of the domain Lucian.com

Many Thanks

In my domaining infancy, I would say that is a pretty darn good domain name! rmg is probably right about the commercial value, but this (to me) is pretty premium and would be worth holding onto until you get a reasonable offer. What is reasonable? I will let the experts chirp in on price for reseller/end-user.

Never know if a movie will come out with that name!

I can see you two are new to the domaining field. So let me handle this:

Lucian is a name -- not a common one from my understanding but a real first-name. And it was used in the popular "Underworld" trilogy, if I recall properly. In a way, the name is associated with sci-fi thanks to it. I wouldn't part with this domain for under $2,000, personally :)

Yes, in a "romantic view" it is not a bad name (and is regged since 1996).

But to develope into a website or to sell to an end user (company) I canยดt see any value there.

I agree with your assessment but there is still a good value here. Jennifer is an extremely common name (more so than Lucian) but nevertheless, even if jennifer.com had no huge business uses, the domain would still be worth a bare-minumum $5,000. I could see lucian.com selling for around $4,000-10,000 roughly. But I'd definately hold onto this unless an offer of at least $2,000 comes about.

Hi Camden; welcome to the forum.
Do you own that name, and if so, how did you come by it?
:)

There are no pricing guidelines for common first names in .com. Tom.com sold for millions. Buydomains have been selling sam.com for $500,000 for a long time, I doubt they would take much less. Lucian at first glance sounds like an odd name for a business, but it has romantic sound to it, so if a business wants a name that sounds romantic, that would be a great choice. I would say the price is between $10,000 and $300,000, depending on how motivated the buyer or seller is.

Hi, thanks for the responses, I don't own the domain nor am I a domainer - sorry for not making that clear. I am the end user trying to purchase the domain, not to re-sell but to do something with.

ArchAngel, your valuation fitted in with mine and it's shame you don't own this domain as negotiations so far have been somewhat frustrating:

03/13/09 Desired Price: Make Offer
03/13/09 My Offer: 1,001 USD

No response for 18 days and had given up on it, then

03/31/09 Counter Offer: 30,000 USD

04/05/09 My offer: 1,100 USD (This offer was made mainly to respond to the seller question as to what my plans for the domain were.

No response for a month, then:

05/02/09 Counter Offer: 25,000 USD Seller mentioned possibility of leasing the name at the price I was offering.

05/09/09 My Offer: 2,000 USD

No response yet

05/22/09 My Offer: 2,500 USD
05/22/09 My Offer: 3,000 USD

I've just made the last two offers to try and get things moving because it doesn't seem to be going anywhere at present. I am interested to know, is it usual to wait up to a month before responding to an offer? It doesn't seem a very good or respectful way to conduct business.

I'm pretty much resigned to not getting it as I get the impression the seller is probably quite financially comfortable and just enjoys getting the anecdote of buying something for nothing and selling it for super big bucks, and he's quite happy to sit on it for years for that anecdote and miss out on a few thousand offered by the most motivated buyer for that domain that has ever or will ever exist.

Regarding the value of the domain I think you need to understand some of the issues the name Lucian has with it. Three different pronunciations: Lu-cee-ann, Lu-shan and Lu-chan. People often spell it as Lucien, on websites where I post as Lucian, about 25% of people cannot help themselves from spelling it that way. Lucien is the French version and probably a more valuable domain name because there is only one pronunciation.

So I don't see Lucian as a great name for a business... After shave maybe? But wouldn't Lucien be better for that? My value in it is in the fact that an I'm an aspiring singer songwriter (and novelist). Completely unknown however, with no fan base of any kind. Just a guy in his mid thirties trying to do something with his life. What I also have to factor into it is that all the other Lucians are unobtainable. Youtube, MySpace, Twitter - all long since gone. Where as I own the domain Lucian+plus my surname and have that on Youtube, MySpace etc.

And I also have to factor in the fact that it's very difficult to make money in music these days. Actually, since the entire system of global capital is about to collapse, it seems pretty difficult to make any money out of anything.

Thanks again for your help, sorry for the lengthy post, but I thought it might be interesting for you to view an end user's perspective.

Regards

You aren't suppose to ask for appraisals of domains you don't own but no harm was done :) Anyway, you do make a good point about the spelling of the term. But remember that if ppl KNOW what they are looking for, they might not misspell the term. Either way, a first-name domain still holds value -- sometimes heavily -- nevertheless. I couldn't see Amy.com selling for $50,000 while Aimee.com went for $1,000. Both spellings are common enough.

Seeing its age, I doubt you'll get lucian.com for under $20,000. The owner seems to have had it long enough and I don't think he'd sell it cheap. In today's market, $30,000 might be a bit steep for this (I think randy.com sold for about $17,000. Randy is a dictionary word, too). But I have doubts he'll sell for under $20k.

I'm a writer, awaiting my first book's sale. I'll try to buy randy.something when the money comes in :) For now, just wait. Be GLAD he's selling so steep. Chances are, the domain will still be there for you to buy later on, when you have the money for it. That's better than the domain being in use by an enduser who'll never sell it to you. :)
