Living from domains

Hey guys! I'm new to this whole thing, domain business or whatever you want to call it. I stumbled upon buy/sell domain business on google the other day, and I actually got really good ideas that I have wrote down on paper and about to purchase them. I just wondered, how good is actually this? Can you earn some good cash from this? I've seen domains being sold for like 50k or so and I'm really interested in this business. Hi Mirko, welcome to the community! I highly recommend you to read articles and forum posts about domaining as many as you can before make serious investment. You can make a living from domains, but don't expect 50k+ offers on handreg domains, altough it's possible, but very little chance

Hey welcome to namepros ! :D yes before you start buying check out namebio for recent sales etc.. and also just check all the auctions here and other market places to get a general idea of what sells.

Also try to read threads on here as they are many different trends etc..

Most of all just take your time and don't rush into buying names straight away

Living off domains is possible. It takes a lot of work, time, knowledge and know how. It wont happen over night. I suggest you start paying attention to sales and auctions and try and get a understanding, on what domains are selling for. Also learn the difference between a bad domain and a good domain before you start buying them

Hi Mirko, Most of the high end names are registered long back. If you have high budget then you can invest in these domains. If you have a low budget it is always good to start with brandables, geo domains, two word .coms, exact match keywords and expired auction domains.

First off, welcome!

Second, enthusiasm is a double edged sword for beginners. You need it to succeed but it can cause beginners to register bad domains and waste money when they're just starting out. Be enthused to learn, before spending any cash.

I mean no disrespect, but if your ideas are truly "great", the domains wouldn't be available for registration.

Now for some sobering thought: the vast majority of domainers are losing money, so the activity qualifies as a hobby most of the time. For a few, it qualifies as an investment (or pocket change). For a very few, it can be a full-time occupation.
Selling domains is very hard, because the good stuff is already taken (broadly speaking) and domains are not a liquid commodity. Few people will ever buy a domain on the aftermarket. If they do, it will be when they have to. You must be prepared to be patient even if you have good names.

I use a mix of both strategies and both have worked for me. However, a ton of research and now, experience, informs what I buy these days. And even today, I am dropping a number of names that I thought were great ideas when I bought them a year ago And I am profitable.

You have to be careful especially when starting out, because you can go on a real tear registering tons of names that you think are gold but turn out to be un-sellable.

Last thing: domaining is not easy and it is not, in my experience, passive. Like some others have said it takes a ton of work, research, watching auctions, even a ton of administrative work if/when you have built up to hundreds or thousands of names in inventory. And, you probably need to have an above average intelligence and a lasting passion for this niche market we call Domaining in order to "live from it."
