Hey all,
I'm a huge fan of free things, and as a result I use mostly free software and free web services. I've been everywhere with free hosts, and it's really safe to say that paid hosting outclasses the free stuff 99 times out of 100. Nevertheless, I've taken the time to put together a list of notable free hosts, most of them don't force ads on you. The ones that I put comments in italics beside them are the lemons I don't recommend. Please add to this list.
]FreeHostia
AwardSpace - not great, system sucks
ProPHP
XLPHP -control panel is awful, sort of an average clone with nothing great
PhpNet
IfastNet
Nytka -too complicated control panel, slow service
50Webs
AtSpace -lousy control panel, no php/mysql, rotten ftp access
UnlimitedMB -only thing bad is the unblockable online poker pop-ups
