What is link farming? Does it affect search engine ranking of keywords?

As I know, link farming is a group of sites which hyperlink to each other. It is a form of spamming which is hated by Google, so I prefer to stay away from it.

Link Farming is a bunch of links in a link page that doesn't have any relation with the website in regards to category..
For intance you see there are links of viagra, dating, web hosting and other types of sites in a site of religion.. Then you can call that link farm.
It's an obvious way of spamming just to create link.

Linkfarms are often built for niches that have a hard time obtaining backlinks the legit way... such as the poker/pharm niche.
