Hey everyone,

I started in the domain industry just four months ago, and looking back, I realize I made a lot of mistakes—mainly by buying pigeon domains (bad domains with little to no value). I thought I was smart and that I could easily find the best domain names just by playing around with ChatGPT. But reality hit hard!

This month, I’ve decided to slow down and focus on learning instead of rushing into more purchases. And honestly, I believe NamePros is a treasure trove for anyone serious about domaining. The knowledge, insights, and discussions here are invaluable, and I’m grateful to be part of this community.

Looking forward to learning more and improving!

One domain can change your life, best to be patient.

Took me 15 years to figure it out, so you're ahead of the curve!

buying pigeon domains

No need to mince words, it's pigeon shit domains, also known as All Domains For Sale on a forum near you.

Wish you luck, it's tough.

I'm in my third year and my biggest sale to date is $2,499 which is normally called a "small sale" by investors.

Different people play different games in domaining. There are strategies to win in what you call pigeon domaining but you can get burned very badly if you don't know what you are doing. Thanks for sharing. My recommendation for learning is that you be willing to ask questions that you want an answer to. I have always found that the Namepros community are very willing to answer questions without the B.S. that you can find in other places.

Hi

sale size, is more about perspectives.
that includes acquisition/holding costs and the profit percentages.

Well 4 months in, is a very short time to be making self-judgements, it's usually at least a year or two when you have a little history that you can look back and truly reflect.

So I would've hoped this judgement was more based on intensive and reflective reading of some of the excellent posts on NamePros during your last 4 months.

The danger is that it is quite easy to find yourself going from 'Pillar-to-Post' on domain registrations. particularly for new-commers. That is you have one mindset, then switch this over and over again without making any real progress.

My advice is, Identify the key fundamentals in good domains, try to stick with business areas that you are familiar with at the beginning, then your confidence in other areas will grow. Don't be looking to base your judgement purely on sales over such a short time period.

The biggest problem for new-commers, as I see it, is allowing yourself to become 'Overly Creative' at the beginning and trying to rewrite the basic rule-book. Stay away from registrations where you know yourself that your chosen term is way down anybody's preference list, just because all the other preferential terms were taken.

A good domain term or construct, should always be instantly clickable by those by those exploring that particular market area. Sounds basic I know, but, there are always terms/domains available for immerging/developing markets. These don't have to be outright new markets as such but Growth areas within, where new-shoots emerge.

REMEMBER, When it comes to domains, Always better to find yourself Top-Dog of a smaller pack, then way down the pecking order in a larger one

Thank you so much for your comment. I agree with you—it’s too soon to make a judgment. The only thing I’ve noticed is that learning takes time, yet people, myself included, often want to see results quickly. That was my mindset in the beginning, but now I’m trying to be patient and focus on the learning process and read what people are sharing here.
