why is this company reserving all those 1 letter domains? are they ever going to sell them or give them away?

Iana isn't a company. It's a regulatory body, just like Icann and according to the rules they reserved nearly all 1 character domains and most probably they won't be available to be registered again. There are a few 1 character domains registered though, like I.net, q.net, x.com, z.com, q.com. Most of them were registered before Icann took over the registry.

Why did they decide to reserve the one letter domains?

Here's the answer straight from the late Jon Postel in a post from 1994. Jon was a former head of IANA and considered by most to be the Father of the Internet and one of the founders of the domain name system we use today.

You can buy 1 letter domains as long as the holder is willing to sell and you have deep enough pockets. ;)

Whoa, I never knew that such a company does such a thing. Sooner or later the company may give up holding these domains since they have to look after about 36 domains really. But the fact of having one character domain names are awesome. :tu:
