Keyword Value V/S Keyword Competition

Hello Namepros Members. I wanted to address the subject of establishing what keyword value is.

First of all, why is keyword value important?

Keyword value is important because it tells you the number of searchers for a particular keyword phrase as opposed to the number of competing sites for the very same keyword. Finding out this pertinent information can give you a good measurement as to the true consumer value of a given domain name.

Keyword Value or KEI Formula

O.K.

Let's consider a keyword domain phrase that I recently purchased and figure out the true keyword value.

Our keyword phrase for this example is 'Wall Stickers'. (my domain: WallStickers.info)

Step 1 - Find out the number of competing sites

1. Type in Google Search Box the keyword phrase: Wall Stickers
Results: My server shows approximately 2,410,000 competing sites for Wall Stickers. (web page results may vary from server to server)

Step 2 - Establish the number of web searches for the phrase Wall Stickers.

2. Go to Google Keyword Tool and gather 'broad search data' for the phrase - Wall Stickers. (It's O.K. to use broad search results as the competing sites data also includes sites without keyword in URL)
Results: Google Data shows about 135,000 monthly searches for this phrase.

Step 3 - Calculate the Equation [KEI = (P^2/C)]]

Formula Key
P = Popularity or the number of monthly searches
C = Competition or the number of competing sites.

3. Let's plug in the data: [ 135,000^2/2,410,000 ] = KEI of 7562.24% WOW!!!

What does this mean?

This could mean that you have a very good keyword with good search traction and low competion!!!

However, this does not always mean instant success!

Please Note: "The number of search results cannot really tell you whether it is easy to get your web site listed in the top 10 results for that keyword or not. It's much easier to move your web site from position 50,000 to position 32,000 than from position 210 to position 8." [reference: SEO News ]

Step 4 - Decide whether to Sale or Develop Domain

Step 4. This strategy is completely up to you, but remember that a developed website with revenue earnings sell for X10's their value.

Great formula.

Question: Does P^2 mean "P squared"?

:tri: (me. ha!)

Yes. It means - "P Squared"

Alright. I'll post another equation.

Our keyword for this example is Anti Itch

Here's the data:
Popularity (p) = 27,100 broad monthly searches
Competition (C) = 2,910,000 competing sites

Let's plug the data for this equation [KEI = (P^2/C)]

27,100^2/2,910,000 = 250%

This data means that the phrase "Ant Itch" has few website competitors and and about a 250% chance of garnering "more website traffic" and "1st page rankings" across Google and other search engines.

Please Note: any keyword or keyword phrase above 40% is worthy of consideration.

WordTracker qoutes:

"In a nutshell - look for the keywords near the top. The higher the KEI, the more popular your keywords are, and the less competition they have. Which means you have a better chance of getting to the top."

Hope this info helps,

A few questions:

1. you obtain the figures of "competing sites" from the worldwide Google results, but

2. only consider monthly Google searches in the US ?

3. how do you end up with the results in "%" (percent) ?

cheers

In principle, we are only dealing with Google Data from the United States.

However, "these statistics also show the approximate number of search queries matching your keywords that were performed on Google and the search network." [this is a direct quote from Google retrieved on Jan 13, 2009 from Google FAQ

So in essence, Google is aggregating & normalizing its external keyword tool data with 'search results gather from its US Google results and its Search Network.

Rightfully, some may ask: "Who is part of Google's network and How big is it's reach?"

Answer from Google:
"The Google Network is the largest advertising network available online, reaching over 86% of Internet users worldwide."

Reference: http://adwords.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=6119

Other Notes:
KEI is basically a fraction which is expressed in percentages.

For example, let's say that the term "Blog" only yields 40 search results with only 100 competing sites. Your fraction would be 40/100 which translates to 40%.

I hope this helps,
