I'd appreciate an appraisal for this domain ( kernel.net )

the keyword "kernel" gets 1.8 million searches per month

Thank you in advance! :)

The keyword "Kernel" gets 12,100 local and 90,500 global exact searches per month, according to the google keyword tool. You were probably looking at the broad search value.

That being said I do think it is a good name with a bunch of endusers you could market it to. It's actual meaning is not to significant, as it would relate to any one companies main product exactly, in my opinion. However, I also feel names such as this definitely have some brandable value as well - one word, not an extremely common word, good exact search volume. It is a dot net though.

All that being said I would expect to get between $1,000 and $1,500 from an enduser.

Yours is a great piece of advice!

Could you please tell me how to get the values for the exact searches? Should I be logged in with my adWords account?

Thank you for the reply!

Thank you!

Google Keyword Tool's default is "Broad" searches. So, what you will need to do is when you type in a word to check search volume, after it returns the search volume results, change the "Match Type" option from "Broad" to "Exact"

I understand why you would want exact when you have a fairly generic word to get a kind of idea of the scope of searches on your key words; however, I have yet to meet anyone in the general public who uses quotes exclusively.

I usually type [kernel panic] and not "kernel panic". Now obviously kernel is the key word in each and would surely help kernel.net? No?

I love this domain name from a purely geek standpoint. I'm sure that some OS write would like it... Definitely a great linux site potential..

The exact searches in the google keyword tool does not really have anything to with searches done by users putting quotes around the keywords when they search in google. It has to do with the number of exact match searches for the keyword term that are performed in google. Exact match search volume is one of a few factors that is extremely important for analyzing the value of a domain.

Thank you a lot for the tip, I wonder why I never noticed the button to change the match type :]

So this means that there are 1.8 million searches a month containing the word kernel.
For these searches the domain name would be a partial match, so as said by default_user, the domain would still benefit from them, but on a weaker level.

Understood :)

Thank you again!

@default_user

I agree with you, this domain has good potential for some kind of linux site. I still have to decide how to develop it. I do use linux, but I'm not into the kernel at all :)

Also broad match includes a LOT of things in addition to the keyword - it's a count of searches for the keyword with and without other words in any order AND synonyms, plurals, different spellings...

It's a meaningful metric for Advertisers (the intended audience of the Keyword tool), but for domainers? Not so much :)!

Ah, so it's a much more artificial data than I thought.

Then I should check exact and phrase match types to look for partial and exact matches.

Thank you!
