Hey guys i was in touch with a programmer yesterday.

He said he can "clone" pool.com for $3000+ a little bit.

Also he said he will be able to catch domains with this script also or money back guarentee.

Well i cant afford that much, anyone think Npers can say start a fund to get the money needed for the script?

Working together to clone Pool.com is an interesting idea. I wonder if it would be feasible to do that...

The "other" issue here (other than the cost that is) would be how effective and realistic what the programmer is claiming to be true.

As in, anybody can possibly claim to have a script that does this, but if you've noted many sites (like Expirefish, etc.) they aren't that effective. At the same time, while I'm not privy of Pool's inner workings, they don't appear to be grabbing the domains off some simple scripting system.

And I've gotten a couple of domains from Pool in the past, and it was *not* Pool per se who grabbed the domains, but one of their affiliates. So I wonder about the validation of a "script" to do this would be?

Other than that, however, the main issue you'd probably want to raise here isn't necessarily the software/script to clone Pool, BUT to clone Pool itself by way of some cooperative of domainers.. and that's not a bad idea at all.

Give your programmer a break & chance to prove what he says and offer him an agreement on the basis of "(affordable) Cash + Commission (from future earnings)." If he is confident of himself then he should accept your offer, otherwise, it's anybody's guess what he claims...!!!

Pool's advantage lies in a two things:

#1. excellent heuristics for submitting availability lookups
#2. many dedicated registrar links to the registry for performing the lookups

Even if you had the best programmer in the world write a program for you to duplicate #1, you would need to find a cooperative ICANN-accredited com/net/org registrar who can let you use their dedicated whois line/s. Last I heard, this is worth major cash, and not something easily-attainable.

Cloning Pool website is not hard.
Having a script that catch domain is also not hard.

To be effectively catch good domains, you need to work with many registrars which a domain catching script cant do it. Even if you become acredidated registrar for the sake of catching expire domain, you are still not as effective as for professional backorder company like pool which have many registrars catching domains for them.

I would think the script would be useless if you do not accreditation behind it. What would you do with the script if you dont have this? So the first obstical is to get accredited yourself or find a registrar that would be honest enough to sign a contract with you and not cheat you. Even then 1 registrar would not do you much with companies out there that have armys of registrars catching for them.

#1 pool's hardware setup I believe is worth above 250 000 USD
#2 pool has i think 20 registry connections
pool probably has a very indepth system that could very well be "cloned" but the hardware and registry connections cost them like $10k-$20k each a month (apprx).

A registry connection will cost you a min. 5k a month if your really lucky, but realistically more like 10-20k

Don't wanna burst your bubble, but $3000 won't get you catching any names :p
