Jury Duty

I have had a busy day. I had a notice to appear at the court house today for Jury Duty. This was my first ever and it was quite an experience! It was a Capital murder case. All of the prospects were questioned by the defendants lawyer and then also by the district attorney. They started with a prospective pool of about 100 people and then it was cut down to 12 jurors. The defendant allegedly hit his pregnant girlfriend and then the fetus died. They would not tell us how old the fetus was. The girlfriend would not press charges, but the State of Texas is asking for Capital Murder. In Texas if you kill a child under the age of six, it is called Capital murder. If this case is won by the prosecutor then it will set quite a precedent. If a fetus is a living being then would not women getting an abortion be committing murder also? BTW, I did not get picked. It would have very been interesting to sit on this case. I will be following it closely in the days to come!

I am no Texas lawyer (not even a lawyer at all), but I seriously doubt that (atleast just as you mentioned it) sets a precendent in Texas jurisprudence, which sadly has faced many cases of an unborn child being murdered.

The 12 jurors picked are ordered by the judge not to discuss the case to anyone - not even their spouse. I was not chosen, and not bound by the court order.
