Telus defends cellphone porn offerings
Vancouver-based Telus says it has no plans to stop selling pornographic photos and videos to its cellphone customers, despite receiving more than 100 complaints since it started offering the adult content last month.
Canada's second largest phone company is charging $3 to $4 per photo or video.
Spokesman Jim Johanssen said Telus decided to start selling online pornography after tracking a significant portion of customers who were already using their phones to find adult material.
"We can't make adult content go away. It's on your TV, it's on your home computer, it's now coming to your cellphones."
But he defends the new offerings, noting that Telus has put safeguards in place to stop minors from viewing it, and to ensure that the content is legal.
Despite that, Johanssen said, 135 customers have registered complaints with the company.
Johanssen noted phone companies in Europe and Asia have been in the business of selling it for a while, and the North American telecoms have been lagging behind.
By one estimate, North American mobile phone users spent $400 million US in 2005 to download pornography.

Why do so many .mobi threads turn into spam your name(s) threads? It gets a bit anoying to just see posts with only .mobi names and nothing else. There is already a spam your names thread. That would be the "sticky" showcase thread.

Sorry for ranting :)

Telus hangs up on mobile porn service
Globe and Mail Update
Telus Corp. has withdrawn its โ€œadult contentโ€ service to cellphone customers,
effective immediately, a Telus spokesman said Wednesday.

The company had come under a barrage of criticism after introducing the service that allowed adult cellular phone customers to download nude photographs and videos on a pay-per-view basis.

Telus, which launched the offering in January, acknowledged that it had received hundreds of complaints, but did not bow to the pressure until this week. Last Friday, Roman Catholic Archbishop Raymond Roussin said in Vancouver that he was considering cancelling contracts with Telus because its cell-phone offering took the โ€œaccessibility of pornographic material further into the public realm.โ€

Company spokesman Jim Johannsson said Wednesday that Telus โ€œtook the feedback to heartโ€ and decided to cancel the service, for which it had charged interested customers between $3 and $4 for downloads of what the company called โ€œadult content.โ€

The photographs and videos featured โ€œfull and partial nudity, but no sex,โ€ Mr. Johannsson said.

Telus said customers were required to prove that they were, indeed, adults. The age-verification process was โ€œvery rigorous,โ€ Mr. Johannsson said.

Telus initially justified the service by saying that it was only offering what is now universally available. It was the first major wireless carrier in North America to offer such a service.

โ€œIn the six weeks that the service had been up and running, we did have several thousand customers successfully work through the age verification process so that they could download content legally,โ€ Mr. Johannsson said.

Rivals Bell Canada and Rogers Wireless do not sell adult content on their cell phones.

โ€œWe're in the business of introducing new products and services all the time. The telecom industry in Canada is intensely competitive,โ€ Mr. Johannsson said. โ€œAn important part of launching any new product or service is reflecting on customer feedback. We received hundreds of calls . . . and we have taken that to heart.โ€

Mr. Johannsson said when Telus launched its โ€œadult contentโ€ service, it did so without the fanfare of a news release or advertisements.

โ€œIt was announced very discreetly because adults who are looking for adult content tend to seek it out and find it. It's not the kind of thing companies need to promote or advertise.โ€

Cell-phone owners who want to view nude photographs or videos will still find a way, he said, โ€œbecause today's cell phones are able to access the public internet.โ€

Mr. Johannsson said Wednesday that Telus prides itself on being a good corporate citizen. Asked how the company's image had been affected by all the recent exposure, he said โ€œthis has been a difficult time, no question.โ€
