Is this normal behaviour?

There is a two word finance niche term searched 8000 times per month globally. I contacted the .org owner, and offered him $500 which I think is a very generous price, but I wanted to make a good offer and get the domain developed asap. His counter offer was $8000.

Now, it is true that the CPC for this term is about $8 and its a nice niche to get in to. But the term doesnt get any type in traffic, and the competition is not to be ignored. It will take a lot of backlinking to get on to page 1.

Why would anyone pay $8000? I could easily come up with a nice .com domain name, reg it for $10, and spend $8000 on a professional site with a ton of backlinks and be ranking above the fold. The SERPS boost from having the exact match domain sure as hell aint worth $8000!!!

Considering it is not going to get any type in traffic, its not that memorable, and its a .org, how is he coming up with this valuation? Other similar .org names went for the low hundreds, i already checked.

Sorry this has turned into a bit of a rant :)

Everyone has their own way in which to value their domains, the majority of domainers (including me) probably over-value just how valuable their domains are...but in the end, a domain is only as valuable to the end-user so in your case, you can try negotiating for a better price, if not, then you answered your own question, buy a similar domain and build it out!

The owner of the name dont know who is the person beyond that offer , he is i guess "testing" his luck , some big company's dont have problem spending 8k for a name they like even though like you said - it will probably hava more effect on spending those 8k on ppc ads etc
