Hello all,
I was wondering if using the name "Star Wars" would be illegal for a game that a few of my friends are hoping to create. The full game name would be Star Wars: The Rise of the New Republic, and it would be a freeware game. I am not sure if this is illegal or not I think that this would go under Copyright Infringement, but again, I am not sure.
Sincerely,

I would say yes. Sounds pretty infringing to me :) Though, I will say, I am no legal expert, so you might not want to cancel any plans just yet :)

George Lukas

Even if you give away your creation for free, you still can't use another person's property. That would be like breaking into George Lukas's house and giving away his furniture. (I bet he has some cool things too) :)

i do believe star wars (or George lucus) allows these kind of fan things to go on, with consent if you ask for permission,

there was a fan film for star wars not to long ago used all the logo's etc... with permission,

why dont you email them your idea's and plans and get permission, something as huge as star wars is definatly not a good idea to take on without permission.

if you go right ahead and just do it then yeah your asking for trouble, one thing i do remember is the fan movie could not be used to advertise etc... and it had to be a free download.

Good idea Ever. Although it might be hard to track down the contact details of some of the people affiliated with the movie Star Wars

I think your talking about star wars revelations... they can't seem to find an e-mail to contact lucasarts but lucasarts does have a P.O. Box and that, the only problem with that is it would take a long time for the letter to reach them and then come back with a response.
Looks like a letter will be sent ;) Thnx for the responses everyone (if still anyone can shed some more light on this *if possible*feel free to.)

If you make millions with this name for sure some lawyers will come and get you.

Legal or not legal, you will run into problems if money is involved.
