Is this for real??? D-:

Australian Women May Be Killed By Firing Squad

If it is, we need to ALL sign this petition to try to get this girl rescued! I know there are around 15,000 NP members so we can make a difference! I signed the petition (using my hotmail addy to be on the safe side). If this girl actually gets killed over weed, guilty or innocent, it would an unbelievable tragedy!

Let me know what you think and please, if it's not a real story please let us all know!

That is crazy! I can't believe that anyone can even get away with that in this day and age but times are changing. It is cruel and inhumane that a government would do this and I hope that she is saved.

different customs in different countries. Would you condone child porn and paedophilia? Well in some countries they consider it normal. Now flip that around, and think of it in terms of drugs.

If a country doesn't take care of their own, then they are not much of a country. Australia (as far as I know) doesn't support cruel and unusual punishment so if she is sentenced to death, they need to step in and take her out of there.

If she was an American citizen, there probably wouldn't be a story because she would already be back on our soil. :imho:

Are you saying all terrorists should be trialed in their own countries too? Do you know that the FBI goes to other countries around the world to catch terrorists and then bring them back to the US to prosecute them?

It's a pretty bad situation, but I think that the main issue is that she is proclaiming innocence due to them being planted in her bag. I mean, she left from Sydney airport, and got through the security checks there (which is a very difficult thing to do, I know!).

Not sure about this one. I think that they have now pleaded for life imprisonment rather than firing squad, but that still isn't great IMO

Was this a checked bag or carry on? Well it dont matter. Is it possible that it was easy to get through sydney because it was set up? She could have had help there. I guess my only question if why would a government plant that on a nobody? Is her family worth millions or something or is she a very notable person or something ?

She was trying to smuggle some weed in and got caught,But why such a harsh penalty? Iam not condoning what she did,Iam just saying she doesn't deserve the ultimate punishment for it,Hopefuly all will be resolved to were she gets fair punishment. It's not even logical to think the government planted 10 pounds of weed on her,I believe she was being paid to smuggle it in.A mistake on her part,I feel she has already served somewhat of a sentence with what she has to go through mentally right now.But a conspiracy theory does'nt fit IMO

well the puishment fits the crime where is happened. Do I agree with it ? No i cant say I do. But when in another country you need to abide by the rules a regulations in the country you are visiting.

I agree 100%,I just don't agree with the penatly,But if that's the penatly,Then so be it,It's wrong in my opinion and i think due justice should be served. And that is not due justice IMO,It is more of a dictatorship type punishment IMO.

Why should she be prosecuted in Australia? The crime did not happen there.

Because she is from Australia.... her laws are different...and it not known if she will get a fair trial where she is....I'm sure she will, but this is a life and death situation....Her country should at least give her some kind of defence considering that dope smugglers do this quite often... who is to say that she is guilty anyway? Besides.... even if their law states that one must be executed for this crime, do u honestly believe it is right? I mean it is their law, and they can have whatever laws they want but....cmon....
I could be wrong too, but I'm pretty sure that it would be easier to deport her back to Australia to be prosecuted,,, ( IF ) found guilty...

One should not DIE FOR SUCH A CRIME......
Murder - YES
rape - YES
child abuse - YES
and I am sure there are more.....
But not drug related offences.....
If found guilty, punish her!!!! life in prison, whatever..... just not death.. it's not right.......

Someone smack me! I try to stay out of these, (political/religous), debates, but can't resist adding my 2c.

The issue here, IMO, is where to draw the line between national sovereignty and the growing importance and influence of an international, ("planetary", for the futurists, among us), concensus of what is right and just.

We can all agree that the world is becoming a smaller place. As populations expand and communications continue to develop and become more immediate, (ie through the medium that we are now communcating with), debates of this nature will increase. In time, (perhaps, it will be a long time from now-certainly I won't be around to see it), the survival of the human race and of the planet, Spaceship Earth, will take precedence and squabbles over what country should have the legal rights to do what and who's laws are "fair" and who's are "unjust" will subside and be a memory of the past.

There will be less room for limited, narrow, parochial, provincial, or sectarian points of view from either side of the fence as our neighborhoods draw closer and closer together.

But today is today and we are not there, in tomorrows world yet, although we are headed in that direction. We and our ancestors are headed for a rocky road ahead as societies, economies, legal systems, cultures and, perhaps, even belief systems "equalize" and integrate.

If I were judge and jury and had the power, I would order Indonesia and Australia to come to an agreement via arbitration, (mediated by a panel of judges composed of an = % of citizens from each country), and come to a compromise through a carefully crafted agreement that would begin setting precedents for future international legal disputes.

LIke I said I do not agree with the penalty but it is their Law. Once again if you are leaving your country and entering another country you need to be aware of the laws. IF I went to another country and stole from a store and the penalty is my hand to be cut off should I expect the USA to step in and say oh no thats not right? I should be tried in the USA because they will be fair? No I did not commit the crime in the USA and I should face the penalty of the country I am in.

Okee dokee...

Slipondajimmy, it's obvious you've already convicted her in your mind. Do you believe that ridiculous laws are more important than someone's life. Can you consider for one second that she may actually be innocent?

This is simply not a black and white argument. We're talking about a women who comes from a civilized country stuck in an uncivilized situation.

She may or may not have committed a crime on their soil. The laws of their country are obviously constructed to teach "bad" people a lesson and set an extreme example for other "bad" people. They believe weed is a life destroyer such as crack or heroine.

When a citizen of a civilized country is stuck in an uncivilized situation, their country has a responsibility to protect them, IMO. When the severity of punishment obviously outweighs the crime (most of us can agree it does in this situation) then someone with the power to change things needs to step in. I used to kick the shit out of anyone who mistreated my little sister. My mother got to the point where she wouldn't tell me anything my sister told her. I have calmed down quite a bit in my old age, but I still believe it is necessary to let people know that the actions they choose to take are sometimes wrong.

No offense to you sir, but in my opinion (and many others it seems) this is just wrong.

but she wasnt on australian soil.

my server in texas is bound by us laws. becuase its on us soil. if i decide to put something on it thats leagal in the uk doesnt mean i have the right to put it on the server . if it was deemed to be illegal in the usa then ill have my server disconnected and the law after me.

she broke the law in another country. she should be punished in the country.

I don't think many people realize what 9lbs of weed looks like. IT'S A LOT. If a country is trying to cut down on drug trafficing, 9lbs of weed is a big deal to them.

It's about $40,000 USD of weed. It's not like she just had a joint or something :)

The death by firing squad might be overdoing it however.

I don't believe the government planted the drugs.. however, it's possible (and fairly common) that someone else planted the drugs in her luggage OR she was paid to mule them and got caught.

In any case, I'm hoping she gets a fair trial, but I agree with the others who said that if you do the crime, ya gotta do the time (or whatever penalty it is) in the country the crime was committed in. If they have a prisoner exchange program, so much the better.. but I don't think we should or could dictate to another country how to handle their affairs.

Just my quick take.. I feel sorry for the girl, but few realize how difficult it is to regulate these things in the Third World countries.. they need to take a hard stance and enforce the laws they have.

When your in the military or have been in the military you learn a few things regarding others countries laws. They govern thier laws just as the US does. Some countries cities have local laws and some don't.So each country has thier own due justice system,Some are very extreme,Some are based on dictatorship,While some are still comunist law.Rather we agree or disagree,The punishment will most likely be cared out,I in no way agree with it,And shun on it.But alot of countries have a fine line,And if you cross that line,You will be bound by that countries laws for punishment for the crime comitted.
