Always check the links (not by clicking on them), but in your status bar at the bottom to see where they go (or do a View Source). If they don't go to Ebay, then it's a scam. This one goes to some free100 site. Sounds to me like someone is interested in wracking up views, which can get you on a website where it will show to a lot more people. Course if the guy is pulling that stuff, who'd want to buy from him?

It is definitely a scam ...

check the "From:" ...
he (or she) just put "[email protected]" as his/her name in the "<[email protected]>" email account so as to trick you ...

I would suggest that everybody keeps full headers ON while reading emails because the headers "From:" can be manipulated even more than that ... (I have received many spoofs that had the correct eBay address in the "From:" field)

With full headers , take the IP after the first "Received:" and check it in the excellent tool (Domain Dossier) in this address http://centralops.net//co/

Checking the status bar while hovering over a link is also pretty good tactic , but not 100% . I have seen both sites and spoof emails manipulating the status bar .

A good trick is ... right click > copy shortcut > paste in notepad , to see where the link actually goes . But maybe this can also be manipulated somehow (or in the future) .

An even better way (and endorsed by eBay) is ...
type eBay.com to a new explorer window (or use a "favorites" link you are sure that goes straight to eBay.com) and then check if you have a message . If eBay sent you a message it will always be in your "MyeBay" .

Again , though , be careful what the message says , because I have received a 419-type request through eBay messaging system . Plus with the javascript trick some people have stolen some passwords and therefore could possibly manipulate some legit accounts (messages , bids , listings etc) .

In general , be very careful using links from emails (banks , eBay , PayPal etc) . Better log in to the appropriate site (by opening a new window) and start from there .

Dont be too hard on yourself Stephen i too have erased tons of spoof but I also feel for his one, I clicked respond and then it sent me to my sign in page--I wasnt even thinking, but then it didnt work. Then when I tried opening ebay it sent me too ebay.uk I was like what the"****?" i then saw the supposed item that he had bid on and it showed no bids so I am like????? i then went back to the email account and I went to respond to try the email again to inform the guy that I dont ship over seas to england as i live in the states. That is when i felt something fishy about the email because again it sent me to the sign in page and again (duh) i tried to sign in. LOL I imediately clicked back to the email and this is when I noticed the user name. I then went back to ebay and typed in the name to search and that is when i saw he wasnt even registered anymore (can you hear the sirens going off right now!!!?)I'm like holy shit!!!I realized what I have just done. Immediately the first thing I do is close all my windows. Then reopen my browser I proceed first to my Paypal account good I am able to log in and I change my password to something weak but quick, next i move down the line -ebay-gmail-hotmail you get the idea. Thank god nothing had been hijacked guess they must have been asleep at the wheel.

I then turned off my computer
Restart then I did a restore to a week ago.
Next full virus scan.
Then I went back and changed all the passwords again to a very hard 10 case sensitive with numbers password and every account is different, I know its dumb but prior to this I essentially had all my important account with the same password and then stupid low level subsciption type accounts with another--- never again the low level i could care less (they are the new times, time etc) but the banks , paypal, ebay email etc they are all diffrent and freaking hard........

I cant believe i was so dumb and fell for it, but it looked so good and I have been getting questions all week on my auctions so i was even thinking about it.

And even though i changed everything I am still scared my acct is hijacked and i wont be able to log in. I will never respond within my email acct to questions from now on only within the ebay system and it takes me to any type of login pag
I will just reopen the page in my brower and type in the adress myself.

i wonder how many people have been devested by this criminal ring? Imean i am savy and i got nailed I can only imagine less knowledgable people out there, they would have even noticed it.

I got an odd email in this same vein, but the link went to what seemed like a google search (http://www.google.com/ and then various stuff. I'm not sure how that would work exactly unless it was actually someone at or hacked google, but I'll admit I'm not up on all the hack tricks. This was also for an ebay item.

The best way to stay safe is to just not click on a link an email, but always type the place in the browser.

This is a nuisance though, one time I had to change my credit card and I forgot to update a site and I was suspicious of the mail they sent, but it was really them. Upoh logging in though, there was no indication that they needed the new info at the proper site, so without reading that one, would have gotten messed up.

Well I logged into all my accounts tonight no problems phew...But when I went to check my email, low an behold I have 2 emails from the same Phishing ebay" saying he didnt understand my instructions in the first email and could I please respond again. LOL And to top it off i had 2 other emails same kinda format from other members, saying the same thing as the first email--but again after a little snooping and checking they are not members and the link is not ebay.

I guess after this mornings fiasco but save on my part and when they tried later on to hijack my account and were not successful they figured maybe i had mis typed my user/password? in their phish and would try again since they had a "live one" that had responded. I am assuming they are based out of russia because some of the links had .ru (I think what saved me this morning was they were sleeping since in russia it had to be about 3am there time when I ****ed up)

Obviously I have reported it all to ebay, but you know nothing will happen. I would give everything I have to be holding a baseball bat and alone in the same room with these ****ers.

i got one like that before too, saying something about sending him a credit card payment, but then i dont have an ebay account and i dont have a credit card, so he can go ahead and report me

I recieve lots of these also kind of funny as well becuse most of them are to email addresses i do not have tied to my enay account...
I allways do a mouse over there link to the said ebay/paypal ...etc ... . Normally there to something with .hometown.whatever.paypal hope this helps
