Is this a great time to buy?

I don't have much experience. I tried to pick up a name a couple of years ago by manually registering (doh!). At that time I learned a bit and came back just now to pick up the same name.

In recent auctions I am seeing amazing domains go for not so much. I bought AceGuy.com for $59 (minimum) at SnapNames. The domain I have been waiting a couple of years ago looks like it will go for minimum in a couple of days. Lots of other great domains are going for low (to my thinking) prices.

What has happend? Is this normal or have people stopped paying registration because they went bust? I saw one amazing domain go to auction, home site for a company that was doing very well until a while ago.

Has this liquidation been going on for a while (like a year since the financial crisis)?

Good shopping everyone :kickass:

I dont chase names via the auctions but I believe generic/traffic names are more sought after vs made up names these days. Im not sure the type of names your after but based on AceGuy.com you seem to be after made up names.

We have over 1,000 domains and have been letting a lot of them drop when the expire if we don't think they will sell for much and if they don't earn from parking. But we have bought about 100 domains over the past few months for reg fee when we find some that have expired that we like.

I think many people have been getting rid of domains due to the recession. The last two we bought were Metallism.com and Spaceful.com. I used to like made up words but I am now investing more in dictionary words like those to examples.

I would recommend you wait for a while, currently prices are fluctuating, I prefer you wait & see what will happen in the coming few weeks.

Thanks for your comments.

Would "Archivist.com" be an example of a Generic/Traffic name? This one is on auction as I type and has generated a lot of interest (>$500 so far.) I would bid on it lower. But I wonder how many people will type archivist into a search engine. If I had an end use then this one would be useful, but too high for my speculation. As an example, would this be a good investment?

The Google keyword tool is your friend. It will answer that question and also tell you what advertisers will pay for the word.

I checked it out on CPC and got a valuation of $2300. The CPC was $0.77.

I don't have the experience to know if this will translate into cash in my pocket. Otherwise I may have paid up more cash. I stopped watching the auction when it hit $521 with just a few mins left. Shocked to find in NameJet that the domain Archivist.com went for $3,801.

I wonder if an end user was on the case.

Honestly, that seems about right to me, 3800 for archivist. It's a one word dot com that is the name of a profession. It gets 6600 global exact searches. To the right enduser I bet you could get a lot more.

I was watching that name the day it dropped. I thought it was good, but I had no idea it would go for that much. But I see now that Estibot appraised it at $19,000, so that makes sense. It may or may not be a good investment. How many times have you used, heard, or read that word? Yeah, not me either. Over the past 3 months I have registered about 100 one-word, dictionary .coms, but I have had very little interest in them so far. I am hoping the turn out to be a good investment long-term.

I'll tell you this much: If I paid that much money for a domain it would be parked ASAP. Right now it's not resolving...

Good buys are "always in fashion." :) NO TIME / economic restrictions.

I prefer "fresh regs" if possible. I will buy privately if I really want the name.

I fresh-regged > www.literacybee.com and www.initialwave.com recently. Worst case scenario, I spent $15, best case scenario > WHO KNOWS!

Happy New Year!

I am a real novice in this business. I know nothing about what parking pays, for example. So I am not in a position to spend a lot speculatively for that business. I am only looking for domains I think I can develop with content as I think that is all I have any kind of handle on.

People can hardly give their stuff away - It's a great time to buy imo.

I heard that. There are a lot of good domains out there which are becoming available. I think it will be a great time for domaining and will create more chances for future profits. In the dot com land rush interesting names were picked up by "Civilians" who just held on to them thinking they could get a million for a domain worth perhaps a few thousand dollars. If these lapse and come into the hands of domainers I think we will have a more fluid market and more sales volume.

I consider this to be a pretty good time to buy domains because I get more dollars for my euros.
It's sad to see people loose their jobs because of the credit crunch but this also means that companies would sell domains faster for a lower amount because they need the money.

It is always a great time to buy if you are selective.

I think its a fantastic time to buy if you're buying names TO DEVELOP, some great names have dropped in 2009 and 2010 will probably be even better. Not sure if it has to do with older names expiring that may have been registered around 2000 for 10 years ?? ....or that parking income has plummeted so low that names are'nt earning their keep anymore ?
