question Is the expiry date included in drop date calculation?

ICANN .com life cycle shows 75 before domain enters pending delete, and then 5 days in pending delete till domain drops.

Is the expiry date included or excluded in calculating when a domain will enter pending delete?

For example, if domain expired on 1st Aug 2014, does the 75 days duration start on 1st Aug itself or on 2nd Aug?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
30 days after it enters redemption period in almost all cases it will enter the 5 day pending delete period

WHAT happens before it enters the redemption period depends on each registrar

A .com domain drops on the 81st day after expiry.

I'm guessing this information is out of date.

Example:

Domain Name: JAVAJOBS.COM
Updated Date: 2019-05-08T22:18:35Z
Registry Expiry Date: 2019-02-24T05:00:00Z
Domain Status: pendingDelete

Expiry + 81 days = May 15 2019 21:00:00 pacific time

So presumably it would drop in the follow morning (11am -12:15pm) drop time, on May 16th.

But dynadot lists May 14th at 11am.

I looked around for drop date calculators and found a few but none seem accurate anymore. Am I mixed up?

I use the https://www.timeanddate.com/date/dateadded.html calculator. I find it useful except it's not down to hours and minutes. But that can be usually overcome by adding 1 day. Using that and adding 81 days to the registration date says it doesn't drop until the 16th.

The problem might be with Dynadot, the data may being cached. It wouldn't surprise me for this kind of data.

So the expired+81 formula is still trusted for .com?

If that is the case, then not only is dyadot wrong, but so is dropcatch and snapnames:

https://www.dropcatch.com/Domain/javajobs.com says:

"Drop Date: 2019-05-14"

https://www.snapnames.com/domain/javajobs.com.action says:

"May 14th, 10:45 PDT"

80 days, not 81, would make sense since that would be 45 (expired) + 30 (grace) + 5 (pending delete).

But 2019-02-24T05:00:00Z plus 80 days would be Mar 14th at 9pm. Maybe they don't use the "next drop window after expiry+80", maybe then use "drop window on the day of expiry+80" as the formula.

Anyway, let me know if you can find any source saying javajobs(.)com drops on any date other than the 14th. (I'm not even trying to catch this name, just an example.)

It will be deleted on 36th day since entered into Redemption period (Updated Date clearly shows it, time also matters)...
Generic rule for years.

Autorenew Grace Period (prior Redemption) varies... Each registrar has own policy regarding this period...
It can be even 0 days, but no longer than 45 days.

Jurgen: that may be true but for domains in pendingDelete status we don't know when they entered into redemption period, since updated is the time it went into pendingDelete. (Correct me if Im wrong).

Looking at 2 random domains in pendingDelete

Expiry + 80 days = May 18 2019 12:11:27 PDT
Updated + 5 = 2019-05-16T22:18:55Z (a.k.a. Thu May 16 2019 15:18:55 Pac)
Actual drop date: May 17th

Updated: 2019-05-10T22:13:17Z
Expiry + 80 days = May 16 2019 13:04:36 PDT
Updated + 5 days = 2019-05-15T22:13:17Z (a.k.a May 15 2019 15:13:17 Pac)
Actual drop date = May 16

It looks like the only consistent thing is "the morning after updated date + 5".

I just made a drop date calculator and it seems to work on everything I've tested with so far:

www.namespill.com/domain-dropdate-calculator/

Only tested to work on .com names in pendingDelete (and no other) status.

This graphic is from ICANN. It clearly shows the life cycle of .com domain when it drops after expiry is +45+30+5 and then drops on the next day. Are you going to argue with ICANN. There are no ifs or buts about when it drops.

Updated Date is changing in both cases (for .com/.net)...
When Redemption or PendingDelete status was set...
So deletion day is 36th or 6th accordingly since UD.

Regarding PendingDelete domains - just use name.com
They show the correct dates...

This value is not fixed... It may be 0, 1, 10, 15 or anything else up to 45. Depends on registrar.
So only since Redemption you can calculate with accuracy.
