I know godaddy is the most recommended registrar...but is it worth shopping for discounts on other registrars and using them for registering or even transferring (as a newbie I am guessing I will be buying lots of duds or holding them long and renewing or dropping)?

As I understand you have to wait 2 months to transfer but as a newbie I doubt the names will be flying out the door.

Well, besides the discounted price, look at the renewal prices.

Then some registrars have extra freebies that others want money for.

So many different factors.

For me?
I don't wast time at all looking and looking at registrars.
I just grab the latest godaddy coupon and register domains there.

I've used GoDaddy for 10+ years and no issues. If ya have hundreds of domains then their Discount Club is worth the price. If just a handful or two then coupon codes can work although not as good of deals as previous years.

Personally, I don't chase the cheapest coupon code or domain registrar for the few hand-reg domains I register each year. I do a thorough investigation as to who I want to be my domain register, and register my domains at that registrar. Saving $6 or less on a single domain registration is not worth the hassle of transferring the domain to my preferred registrar after 60 days. Time is money.
