There's plenty left, but they are all premiums, and so worth about 1K each.

What do you all think the chances are that this VIP extension picks up steam?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
This is what I mean, many domainers don't see the difference between pure speculation (for instance betting on any random extension for no good reason) and making a calculated risk (educated speculation).
Speculation is not the same as gambling.
.vip is completely unproven at this point, not backed by anything. It is gambling.
I'm not sure if we disagree on the concepts or the vocabulary.

My views are immensely clear.

Gambling - take risky action in the hope of a desired result.

Speculation - investment in stocks, property, or other ventures in the hope of gain but with the risk of loss.

I guess it's how you want to read in to it but for me both terms are equal when discussing purchasing any domain, or extension.

As for purchasing a LLL.vip for 1k upfront, I personally wouldn't do that but I'm sure some will.

They just had their first auction, .vip sold these and totaling $146,000.00.

The 6 domains :

I.Vip

520.VIP ( meaning I love you)

100.VIP

18.VIP

Che.VIP ( Car)

TM.VIP

It's quite typical: good sales are made in the beginning, when the TLD is launched, then nothing. The extension dies out. And the seller is almost always the registry. This is no different than the .asia auctions 8 years ago.

There are so many ngTLDs and more coming in future, maybe you buy few and try out in Auctions and see yourself, you'll surely get an idea.

.VIP, in my opinion, is no different than the hundreds of other new extensions. There is no history of performance, and real value outside the domaining community. There is a high likelihood that those who buy in to this extension will be holding on to them for a long, long time, while paying renewals. There is just no data to support profitable performance. Certainly domaining includes taking risk, but in quantifying risk, there are better, less risky options.

In the relatively short time that I have been reading this forum, this very conversation has happened over and over again about a multitude of extensions that have yet to take off.

Certainly best of luck to anyone that takes the risk with .VIP.

One more point wanted to add IMO...ngTLDs with wider and global appeal may have future rather than ngTLDs limited to certain geographical areas or communities. But again it is difficult to distinguish which one is what so better you be a better judge after evaluating facts.

Free formula for success in new gTLD investments: keyword+gTLD = something meaningful.

Thank you, all! I seriously came this close... Had my CC info plugged in and everything. But, thankfully, I gave it enough time for rationality to set in. And you all have helped me so as not to let that pesky excitement take its sporadic, involuntary (potentially-in-the-end-screwing-me-over) toll...

It's best to think sometimes... ;)

Atta boy! Good decision. Don't give the registries your hard-earned money for domains they've deemed "premium". I don't care what the TLD or domain is. It's not their business. Their business should be to provide fair and equal pricing across the board. Unfortunately, they think they're domainers now, too. It's akin to them becoming used car lots.

Always best to give these decisions a day or two, let rationality sink in.

Is it worth investing in LLL.VIPs?

I don't know but I think the question should be: Is it worth GAMBLING in the LLL.VIP casino?

I don't think one can call that investing.

For investing you need a proven investment grade extension with a track record, fundamentals, sales history, genuine demand, understanding of the market etc.

If you don't have these you are flying blind and you are risking money and hoping for a uncertain payout. The registry has already premium priced most domains that might have value so the odds tend to be stacked against you. This is no different than a casino and usually the house (the registry) wins.

And what is funny is that .vip will soon be old news. In a few weeks time domainers will be moving on to the next extension, and conveniently forget about the previous one. When I see the stuff that people are buying, I think the drop rate will be 100% - more or less.
Domaining is like circus, there is always something going on to distract you. Spend less, think more.

which leads to another question: if the next extension is always the next big thing how many next big things can the market absorb? Surely the number must be limited. Even .biz, .info were not easy to sell.

Just like the Lottery a few will win, Most will end up with "Sorry better luck next time" If you feel lucky take a punt. I know of a few domainers who have sold absolute junk for $xx,xxx so I won't rule anything out. You have to be in it to win it I guess. I on the other hand prefer safer bets liquid .com / .net and .co.uk domain names.

I personally did not go for any 3 letter .vip domains. My take is 3 letters are good if they are actual words. Acronyms only become valuable if they are the right combination of letters, or after the extension has sold all the good words or if the extension can be used as a domain hack. Unfortunately .vip cannot be used as a domain hack, there simply are no words in English ending in vip. I do not know if this is true with other languages.

One word .cc .io .co .xyz .club .info etc sold for $$$$ so why not .vip

if you register domain for 1k you already paid end user price to registry. so you cant make really profit from that.

If the price were $10 per name, I would try to get some. For a thousand bucks? No way!

I can get a LLL .ORG or .CO via a drop catch service, twenty times cheaper. Maybe LLL .VIPs will be considered valuable a day, I don't know, but a thousand dollars is a lot of money for a brand new extension.

But that's just my way of thinking.
