I know they breath, bleed and know when they're under-attack or hurt (Not the same as Pain mind you) but you can't compare those traits to Animals breathing, bleeding etc. really.

i agree that you compare the life of a plant with the life of an animal...but both species live, eat, breath, and die. You can't condemn killing one form of life for food yet condone killing another form of life for food. Like i said, if you want to really find 'cruelty free' food, you'll have to turn to a diet of dirt, stones, rocks....and maybe the chemically synthetic crap they manufacture nowadays...

That's kind-of the point I was trying to make. It's kind-of hypocritical of a Vegan to say they only eat Plants because killing animals is cruel, but killing plants is cruel to the plant! :)

I don't mind Vegetarians who don't like meat, or for religious reasons or even if they are opposed to the meat industry and are protesting in some very peculiar way. The last ones though would / should eat meat killed by a hunter though as the animal doesn't suffer (if you're any good at it).

i think the native american indians had the best example when it came to respect for the earth, environment, and animals. Yes, we eat animals for food, but there should be a respect for the animals that we eat.

In a way, it's like a circle of life. Humans may have the ability to hunt and eat the animals of the earth, but one day, we die and are eaten by the earth, some animals, and bugs....kinda morbid when you think about it, but it puts things in percpective

Just thinking of American Indians brought this Farside strip where an Indian Chief is standing in front of some children holding a weird looking thing and says "This is the only part of the buffalo we don't use." Anyways I couldn't find the strip on the net so imagine it :).

I don't see how hunting could be wrong. Dog fighting is just cruelty to animals.

Why do people have to be ugly. :td:

The problem with the individuals who run the meat packing industry is that they have no honor or respect for life. They are committing pretty much the same crimes as Vick and his crew, but on an incredibly grand scale. Every hunter I've ever met has respect for animals and want the ones they hunt to suffer as little as possible. This shows character and honor. Individuals who make jokes about animal cruelty and feel nothing tugging at their heartstrings when they are exposed to it are only one small step up from the a$$holes who run the meat packing industry.

Do you think calling me names by using dollar signs instead of the letter s is allowed on this forum? Probably not, so shame on you. You should know better. I'm sorry if I don't feel sorry for chickens and you don't like it. Does that also mean that because I like eggs I support abortion? I am a hunter and I am a very good shot. I hate when the first shot does not kill. It happens.

And don't be fooled by the American indian rap. They are allowed to hunt indiscriminately with no season. Non-indian hunters must wait for the season to hunt by the rules. This is very difficult after 6-9 months of the hunting equivalent of clear cutting.

On to the Meat Packing Industry.

Does your boss look over your shoulder for 8 hours a day? Probably not. How can a few people police the entire workforce? Sure, the management is responsible for the behavior of its workforce but it's very expensive to constantly hire and train new people. Not to mention the difficulty in finding people that can handle that job. Working in a meat packing plant on the line does not require a PhD. Unless the general public is willing to pay double or triple what they are already paying, the conditions are not going to improve.

Doing away with the meat industry seems simple enough except what are you going to do with all of these workers? They are people that have familys to feed. Besides how do you intend to turn a meat eating population into veegans?

Once again, there is no bridge between the great divide between both sides of this issue.

I didn't call you a name.

As far as I know, there is nothing like this going on anywhere near where I live.

The USDA is opposed to the Humane Slaughter Act, which is a law requiring that animals be stunned unconscious before being hoisted up on the line. Violations of the Act carry no penalties, which enables most USDA employees to ignore it. Stopping the line (to re-stun conscious animals for example) causes downtime, so any rare USDA supervisor who wants to continually stop the line for any reason is reprimanded or reassigned.

There are only a few small changes to the line that would effectively end most cruelty occurring in slaughterhouses across the country. Some changes have already been implemented, but the meat packing industry opposes change completely and the USDA bends over when the industry tells them to.

I disagree that the price of meat would double or triple, even if one or two extra inspectors were hired per line to monitor and record cruelty. Even so, American's love meat and milk. If the price of meat doubled, people would bitch and moan to themselves, but they'd still buy it. When the price of milk recently went into the stratosphere, the general public had no idea why... and surprise, surprise, they still continue to buy milk. Organic milk is over $6 per gallon and it continually sells out at our local Wal-Mart.

Did someone else on the thread mention that we should do away with the meat industry? I don't remember saying anything of the sort.

When both sides go to extremes, nobody will budge.
