It has alot less importance than it used to... now its more a bonus (like google PR) than anything you should strive towards.

Hi,

Well we have a debate about this on my directory forum.

In my view it does help to get listed in DMOZ as many search engines use the DMOZ database so if you get listed it is a big help.

I wouldn't call it a necessity (there's no reason at all why you can't succeed without it), but it does help since there are other directories out there that pull links from DMOZ...so if you get a link there, you'll get a handful more from these.

DMOZ has it issues, like all directories. Getting listed may depend on the mood of the editor when he/she sees your site, and can take a year (no exaggeration).

Any extra traffic you can gain from the larger engines / directories is a plus IMO. I won't break my back for a listing but If I can get listed anywhere without jumping through too many "Hoops" I'll still put forth an effort.

In the past , There were several Categories handled by "Silly" people on DMOZ that you just couldn't satisfy unless you were on their "Buddy" list it seemed to me. So I will attempt it only on larger and long term sites I intend to keep.

DMOZ listing is important but you can't just depend on it as listing is not guaranteed, but it's the bonus for adding your site there. Once you get listed in the directory, then your website will be added to Google Directory automatically.

I would rather my yahoo directory listings over my dmoz listings any day, being in the yahoo dir does increase yahoo search traffic being in dmoz doesnt increase much of anything any more se's have been putting less importance on it for a while. Just look how much child porn and other spammy agaisnt there tos sites there have been on dmoz.

My guess would be those sites snuck in when domains dropped and people bought them for their spammy purposes.

Good to hear you are having luck with your Yahoo! listing, I may try that some day...just don't know for which domain.

Todays search engines use spiders, computer programs, that find content for humans.. directories like dmoz is run by humans, for humans, so naturally the results are more relevant and the sites are better... because of this, dmoz and other esteemed directories like yahoo's dir are often crawled by spiders first and most often. There for it will benefit you alot to continue to get listed in directories, especially the big ones.

It's worth it to get listed there sure, but by no means is it a necessity. As Mark said, your listing there will depend solely upon the person who is the editor. Often times they are very efficient and I've had sites make it in after only a week or two in the past it seems. Other times, sites that I submitted months ago are still not in and probably won't ever be. You can definitely sometimes feel the benefit of DMOZ traffic and the search engine spider visits are always a plus.

I guess it's still NICE to have a link there ;)

I have never submitted to DMOZ and i never plan to. That is how unimportant it is.

Why not try to get listed in DMOZ? Here's a few pluses:

1) More relevant and trusted backlinks
2) Higher SERPs
3) More traffic for your site

All in all why not devote a couple minutes of your time and TRY to get listed? There's nothing but positives so not even bothering with DMOZ won't help you. If you plan on having a site listed and found in the search engines, you'll definitely want to have your site found on DMOZ. Hey, when your competition is listed there and their site is optimized slightly less than yours, chances are they'll be higher in the SERPs than you, especially in Google.

Sometimes I begin to wonder if this is the real the real thing. What does DMOZ really want. It feels that they change their rules so often. Or accomadate those who they see redemanable.
