"It is natural for people to be sceptical of anything new but, as always, the early adopters led the way when they first used the mobile for checking email – now people buy music, watch video and read the news."

{Is DotMobi just about domain registration?}
Not at all – we are conducting a lot of primary research at the moment. We are trying to build the mobile internet ecosystem and a lot of cutting-edge research on this is happening in Dublin.
Truly nice to hear that.

Also liked the part about mobile growing slowly for a while then suddenly exploding. That certainly is a function of technology and price - once people can do really cool stuff and not pay a lot for it then they will come.

Old rehashed news. BMW and Rolls-Royce have had their sites up a long time ago yet keep on being touted as if it's mindboggling news that indicates how .mobi is growing in popularity. Things are a bit stagnant as of late if you ask me. Also the 800.000 domains sold so far wont remain 800,000 for much longer as renewals for the initial 2 year regs come up. A lot of .mobi's will be dropped which will bring the total amount of .mobi regs down significantly.
Still, I hope .mobi becomes a big success.

You are right about the drops - this is the second time I have seen a mTLD rep use the talking point that they are about to hit a million. Well firstly, a million is not a lot as these things go and secondly, come October/November the junk regs will come back home.

Maybe lower renewal fees would lead to less drops :imho:
Also, it is really only a matter of time before mobi regs go
through the roof. Why...because once this becomes mainstream
everybody will want in on the action!

So true.

Yes, but a matter of how much time? The idea of growing slowly then exploding as the article said ... the technology / price ratio is not there yet to interest the masses. There is not something really cool that you can do a lot of on the mobile internet yet. I read somewhere that a new innovation needs to be 10X better than the old to really take off. Mobile is not there yet, and it could be several years.

The gap of time between now and take-off is opportuntity for mTLD to position .mobi as the extension for mobile, for domainers to stake their claims on their choice domains and for developers to get ready.
