84% of DNS servers can be easily hacked as reported by The Measurement Factory.

There are 7.5 million of DNS worldwide.

It certainly is possible but how soon do you think hackers will take out millions of dns servers?

Also remember there are a lot of kids out there whom know nothing about DNS servers yet are running web hosting companies. If your worried about the internet going down, you should be more worried about the root servers ;)

The world is developing toward a way that could be easily destroyed by itself!

As a matter of fact, 3 years ago someone or some parties pulled that off:

http://news.com.com/2100-1001-963095.html

A widespread but unsophisticated attack on the computers that act as the address books for the Internet failed to cause any major problems, but experts warn that more security is necessary.

Beginning Monday, a flood of data barraged the Internet's 13 domain-name service (DNS) root servers in what's known as a denial-of-service attack. But the simple nature of the attack, and the system's resiliency, allowed administrators to quickly block the data stream.

According to security experts, a more sophisticated attack could have disrupted the root servers long enough to impair Net access. Had the attack prevented access to the servers for eight to 10 hours, the average computer user may have noticed slower response times, said Craig Labovitz, director of network security firm Arbor Networks.

"If someone can really take over the infrastructure, it becomes a very different ball game," he said.

Although the attack failed to hobble the Net, there were indications Wednesday that it wasn't over yet, continuing at a lower intensity. In addition, locating the perpetrators will be difficult because the type of attack they used--known as a distributed denial-of-service--typically mask the origins of the assault.

In the wake of the attack, some of the companies and organizations that maintain the 13 key servers have pledged to reassess the security of the computers for which they are responsible.

In my dealings with various hackers aka "script kiddies" I have come across nothing but generally 14-16 year olds with no respect for authority and a desire to show off some tutorials that they read. The scary thing is most of these kids are allowed to run wild on the computer and suffer from a lack of ethics. Consumers are the ones who ultimately suffer and many times its nothing more than a slap on the hand of the youth who perform such acts.

I think there's more danger as far as wide spread outages from worms, though.

So true!

The possibilities are there,But very doubtful they will be able to throw servers into a complete DOS mode for a long period,As CrazyTech says,Script kiddies are the biggest hassles right now,The hardcore hackers have nothing to gain by doing it,Except to say they did it.They are known to do that,But it would be a short term period the net would be down imo

It would be extremely hard to keep things under control as finding 'hacking tutorials' would so easy nowadays. It would take script kiddies a google search to get tutorials and start hacking.
Punishment? Probably nothing if their parents are not smart enough to find out.

Well, most of those hacking tutorials explain how to hack a windows 95/98 machine or some outdated hardware. The real hackers, never give out their secrets. I think the internet is "alive", its like some sort of a being or a creature that no single human will be able to bring down. It will only gain momentum and get more powerful. Nothing can stop it (except me of course).

I have reported so many script kiddies lately its not funny, my forum was hacked a week or so ago with full updates and all, later found out that it was a Webhosting client of mine who had uploaded a file enabling the hacker/script kiddie to get access to the database! This was completely pointless and after this I reported the hack to his ISP, what does his ISP do NOTHING!! what is this world coming to when you can be hosting a warez site on your home cable system and "hacking" other peoples sites and your ISP does nothing about it! it really annoys me, they are getting away with this stuff so they continue.

Most of the time there running little "hacking", "l33t" sites where they show off all there hacked sites, I just love doing a whois on them and calling there parents and telling them what there little angel is up to on the computer.

Well, it is actually quite a problem to organize simultiness hacking of all DNS. But it is POSSIBLE, that's the point

That is very keen observation for a 15 year old person. It will be up to your generation to try and do better than your parents generation did and the generations before them. You are on the right track. If we could eliminate the need for greed, this would be a much better world globally.

Have a good life............... :)
