I was just wondering do search engines care if you use a .info domain name over a .com name? Do they both have equal chance of providing good results?

Where else would it make a difference?

although i'm not sure, i think that .info helps if people include "info" in their search terms. at the end of the day though, what you have on the website plays the biggest role for seo. i have example.info, and it ranks second in yahoo when searching "example". the com version ranks nowhere (parked page).

Absoultely they both have the same chance. Several times I have seen .info domains on the 1st page of Google together with .com, .net, etc.

SERPs depend on the quality of content in a site and relevant backlinks to your site. Domain name may boost it up in SEO, but not the extension.

.info domains are great for SEO from my experience. All my fansites are on .info domains and receives quite good traffic. I don't recommend it for sites that you plan to market huge because people don't recognize this extension and you'll lose lots of traffic. However, if your main target is SE traffic then go for it :)

they are both same. but from a layman's point of view, .com .net etc are definately better as most of the people still are not familiar with .info names

If you spending money on marketing a website (especially offline), .com is best, as that is what people type. Otherwise for SEO and online marketing .info is good for information websites.

yes most people will have difficulty remembering the .info domain. they would naturally assume that it is a .com or at max a .net or .org

I am actually surprised by what I have read in this thread. I thought google and yahoo placed importance on the extension and that if you had the "keyword".com with some dev behind it you would get to the top much easier if you had a "keyword".info with the same content.

I'm not saying a .info can't go higher than a .com but all things being equal in SEO efforts I thought the .com would do better than the .info. Seems like I was wrong in thinking that. I would sure love to hear about more examples.
