I'm experimenting with an SEO package I've just installed. I ran a meta tags generator, and one of the tags it generated included an email address. I deleted this, but then I thought about it. How many buyers would look at the meta tags to find a contact address? My guess would be none, and all I would be doing is to provide the spammers with yet another address to spam.

Has anyone got a contrary opinion?

I was going to state the same as your conclusion. It's a terrible idea to add your e-mail in the meta tags. What will it really achieve?

Getting onto the spammers lists. :)

It was seeing the tag in the generated list that started the thought. I wondered if it was another place that one could place a name for sale message. My instant reaction was to delete the entry, and to use a nae for sale button on the domain index page instead. If meta tags could be used as an alternative to such a button, then it might keep the page cleaner, but a trailer comment on the page would probably be just as good, and might be seen by the potential buyers. I suspect the main readers of the meta tags are the search engines, and the spammers. I just wondered if anyone could see a positive benefit from this idea, because I can't.

Kuffy is always prepared to look at new ideas. :)

You should use a meta description tag to place the message that the domain is for sale. E-mail ID will not really serve the purpose much and will be more trouble (in terms of spam) than beneficial

I'm ambivalent about this. It's obviously a good idea if you want a quick flip on the name. However, if you hope to pull a bit of ad revenue whilst you are waiting for a buyer, then a description based onthe target market for the name may be more useful.

The decision needs to be based on the probability of a potential buyer looking at the meta tags, and I suspect that very few end users will do this. Most of them don't even understand direct navigation, so looking at page source code seems pretty unlikely imho. I'm trying to think of a way to discover how many surfers look at the source code.

With this goal in mind, what was the point of including the e-mail address in the meta description tag originally?

I installed a SEO package in one of my sites, and I ran another site through it. One of the plugins was a meta tag generator, and it created an email tag. I thought this was unwise, and you have confirmed it, but I wondered if I was missing something by deleting the tag. This was my first ( and it looks to be final ) action.

Got it. Thanks for clarifying.
