I looked into getting "in.fo" a long time ago, but it was not allowed as a .fo domain had to be three (3) characters long (or five (5) characters long including the ".fo".) I've looked into getting a lot of these domain hacks as I wrote a search utility to help find them. Anyways, out of the blue, I just received this email:

Just looked up the change in .fo regulations:
So, it may be available. I was told a long time ago that I was #2 on the list. Just thought I'd share this with you all as I am no longer interested in it. Sorry if it is already taken.Today, 1. May, it is allowed to apply for the domain in.fo.
If you want to apply for this domain, then it is important, that you send your application today. If not, you can risk that someone else will take the name. You need to do this:
1) register the domain on 2 nameservers
2) make an application on www.nic.fo
3) sign the document, which will be sent to you, and fax it back to FO-Operator

So they've dropped it down to two (2) characters from three (3). But you still cannot register a one (1) character. So a really short domain like "u.fo" is not a possibility yet...A domain name shall consist of at least two characters (in
addition to .FO) and not more than 63 characters.
