Which I think can happen to anyone...

You login into your NameCheap, Directnic, eNom or your favorite other registar...and your favorite domain name is gone...just not there... It was not a live site, was not with any PPC it just been sitting there collecting dust. You held it in your account to use it one day for something, but just didnt know for what - I am sure we all have one or two names like that.

What would you do in order to get it back? How would you prove to your registar that your name had disappeared from your account, when you don't even have the confirmation email that you registered it - you deleted it...

The cause could be a system error, or possibly the name has been stolen. Except locking the name, what other ways you can present a proof - some kind of a notarized paper document or something...?!?

The reason I am asking this question, I have been thinking about it lately, and wanted to hear your opinions.

As always thank you for your input,

If, while you were the registrant, a "whois" was done using whois.sc then there should be a record(s) in the whois history at:

http://www.whois.sc/whois-history/

Of course you'll have to pay to play.

A good preventative move that i picked up, some time ago, from Staff member, Armstrong, was to save a screen shot of the account page from the registrar site as a backup to show proof of ownership, should a problem arrise. Most registrars have a db storing all transactions/invoices which the customer can access at their site.

This sounds like a good, fast and inexpensive way to prove....Anyone else...come on guys, this info can be usefull to a lot of people. :tu:

And the screenshot should be something more than just the built-in one. one of a camera shot of the screen would be better as less and harder to edit(able).

Good idea. But, using this logic, it follows that the camera shot could be a shot of a previously edited screenshot. Unless there is a screenshot app or an app that would support an unalterable, verifiable timestamp, this approach wouldn't be a 100% guaranteed backup, but could be helpful as supporting evidence.

Just a thought, but if a device like this doesn't exist, it could be a good development project for a programmer. ie Set up a system either on a site or w/ individual software that tied into an atomic time source, for a real time, encrypted timestamp. Again, just a thought- don't know if it is plausible.

Snagnit screen captures can now do an autoscroll capture of the entire web page, rather than the visible section of it on your screen.

Hmm.. Unless I've gone off on the wrong tangent, I think the issue is about pulling the page, reediting the HTML and than creating a "screenshot" of the counterfeit page, which would also apply to a scrolled pg. But good to know about this Stuffit feature- that's the first time I've heard about this capability in a screensaver.
