So I received an email from the previous owner of a domain name I've acquired via TDNAM, demanding that I handover his "virtual home" and at the same time describing how pitiful he is;

Getting fired from his job, unable to pay the mortgage of his home and yet...

..threatens to email everyone he knows about my deed then when I offered a solution to his problem (being unable to access the email for his domain name).

He refused and threatened to use his last sum of money to buy a one way ticket to my country to look for me and depend on me for food & shelter unless I return him his domain name.

He ended up offering $100 for the name and when I refused his offer (having paid way more and with him being so absolutely ludicrous), he's now asking me where he should go, having no money left.

So what do you guys think? Fact or fiction? How should I reply him?

Tell him to use the money he was going to spend on a plane ticket to buy his domain back! That should prove whether this is a scam or not.

Well, he's right about one thing.... he is desperate!! :o On the other hand, I have never seen a homeless man with an email address! Ha!
Ignore this loser.

Waste of time. End all conversation with the loonie.

I'd imagine a homeless guy would have more important things to worry about than a domain name... and if he was unable to pay his mortgage on what is apparently a decent name, why didn't he just sell it for an extra month or so of paying the bills?

If it was me that got that e-mail, I honestly wouldn't know what to say... it's one of the most bizarre I've ever seen.

Very weird. Don't delete the EMails. You might need them as evidence.

Then, I would set up an automatic EMail redirect that pitched some of my other domains. Something like: Thanks for the EMail. Please visit my new address at (address) for more information.

I would also buy some Privacy for the domain and tell him I sold the domain to a private investor. You wish you can help him, but the domain is no longer available. Make sure that he knows that cyberstalking is a crime. Tell him if he threatens you again, you will report him to the authorities. Do not tolerate his threats. If he continues to threaten you, report him.

Lastly, I would set up a page on the domain so that it could be sold for the price you want for the domain. If he really wants it back, he might buy it.

In any case, your time is money. He did not take care of his property and lost it. You are now the new owner of this domain. You are under no obligation to help this person. It is not unethical for you to profit from your purchase.

I wouldn't lie to the guy..

If you don't believe him, just tell him so. Tell him where to get help, and ask him why he didn't renew the domain IF it was his, he offered $100 so he got enough to renew it, whois history can provide you some info on who owned it before.

Check where the emails are from... You can see what servers send it out etc, if its from some ugly country just block him as itll be a scam for sure.

Good luck on this, these things are actually pretty hard to deal with, as you dont want to be heartless & dont want to be stupid enough to fall for scams either.

Normally, I would not lie to him either. I try to be fair in all of my transactions. This guy, however, decided to threaten and bully another person. I think being heartless is ethical in this case.

Why give him your time, you know it's a scam, just block his emails - simple as!

He is a scammer in Asia or eastern Europe just looking to sucker you out of your name.

Well it is too bad for him. Tell him if he really cares about the domain he should of renewed it before it expired.

Or... tell him a fake name and get him pissed off!
