ICANN to Review Domain Tasting

ICANN is eyeing the practice of domain name tasting for policy changes. My firm has a blog post on it here:

Included is a copy of the report, and links to the public comment board and the ICANN e-mail address provided for submissions of public comment.

It looks like the report is heavily in favor of eliminating the practice, so those that rely on tasting may want to review this matter.

I hope it stays, but in a MUCH more restrictive form.. Tasting by a registrar should be severely limited, and individuals should be monitored so that they can't taste thousands of names

Maybe it was brought up becuase of all the problems with Network Solutions holding people's names to ransom with them by immediately tasting the names via their whois search?

i'm not a fan of actual tasting. making legitimate registration mistakes is okay, but tasting just seems too shady imo...

And a compromise could be reached if ICANN would impose a 25 cent fee.

This way those who register a domain by mistake are not stuck with that domain for 1 year, and tasters will stop tasting massively hundreds of thousands of domains, because that would cost a lot.

I happened to register a typo by mistake once, and I was so glad that I could delete it.

That has been suggested many times. Some registrars do charge such a fee but of course that is for their own profit rather than an ICANN imposed fee. It would dramatically decrease domain tasting as it would become a lot more expensive to carry out.

That is the exact scenario that caused the rule to be in place, to help protect people who mistakenly registered a domain name and had 2nd thoughts.

Unfortunately the domain tasters abuse (in my opinion) the system

It's actually been discussed the past 3 years. But it seems Network Solutions'
recent practice is compelling ICANN to resolve this ASAP.

Time will tell how things will eventually happen. I wonder, though, if ICANN will
reconsider their contract with VeriSign to manage the .com/net registry if the
latter chooses to dispute whatever the former says.

Yeah, I like the idea of a small charge. It would eliminate virtually all tasting, and protect any of us who make mistakes/have second thoughts.

Hey, I'd be in favor of a small charge for tasting, maybe get half your money back, if you change your mind. That allows legitimate mistakes to be corrected, but makes it inconvenient for the folks that automatically taste anything that gets checked for availability.

I would be more interested in someone eliminating spam. Maybe, say, I get to charge someone one penny to email me. That way, I make 5 bucks a day to put up with all this daggone spam. Better yet, leave it up to the individual to set pricing. You want to email me? That'll cost you ten dollars, buddy.

I would like to see a fee imposed rather than see a return period completely eliminated. I've made some mistakes without knowing a name was trademarked, and it was a relief to be able to drop it without losing all of my money.

I think domain tasting by registrars is reprehensible.
