ICANN Mandates That All Transfer Requests Go Through?

Just found this message on my GoDaddy reseller. Not sure if this applies to all registrars or what, but its a little scary if it does.

"From November 8-10, we are sending an email to all domain customers informing you of a new domain transfer policy, enforced by ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). This policy dictates that we must honor any transfer requests, even if you do not personally confirm them. To prevent unauthorized transfers, lock your domains. This service is free and takes only a minute."

That's pretty scary... Better not be true for all extensions and registrars or a LOT of theft is going to happen in the next few months... :'(

Yes, this could definitely cause a ton of chaos depending on how far it reaches. Can someone else shed a little more light on this?

Right, this policy takes effect November 12. Most registrars have transfer-lock enabled by default anyway, so I don't expect a lot of chaos from this. Overall it will be a more positive thing if registrars transfer domains when the owner requests so. Too often these rouge registrars like to keep domains hostage, forcing overpriced renewal fees.

Thanks for the link, RJ. Looks like there are some positives if domains can be moved between registrars easier than they are now .

Only time will tell whether this is a positive or a negative move though. It may get abused and then again it might not.

Does all domain extensions support locking??

The new ICANN transfer policies currently apply only to gTLDs (com, net, org,
info, and biz). ccTLDs or country code TLDs still depend on their respective
registries.

Only the registrar provides the locking feature desired to protect them. Check
with your registrar to make sure.

I think .org, .info, .biz, and .us are safe because they still need codes to be transferred.

Very good point. Is that for sure?

Looks like Godaddy locks all the extensions there is, but I'm not able to lock a .info at Registerfly... :|

This domain extensions does NOT support locking. You will be unable to set/get the domain locking for this domain

Edit : Stargate no longer charges to lock domains, Yeah :)

EPP domains (auth codes) will really have a second safety in the auth code, since you must also have the correct auth code for a transfer to succeed in addition to the domain locks sometimes available. Some registrars don't provide locking for EPP domains because the auth code already does this. With com/net, you don't have this second safety factor. I would venture a guess that the .net registry would also go EPP when it renews or goes to a new operator next year, just like .org did.

I think it's important to know that they will send an email to confirm or deny. however if it gets lost or spam filtered, it will go ahead anyway if unlocked after a few days. I can see this being a problem while on vacation if you cannot reply in time to deny. The lock becomes VERY important, and the good thing is it should now be easy to get out of registrars who don't offer them for free. It's also more important to keep your emails updated and watch spam filters carefully.

On the other hand, the new transfer dispute policy similar to the UDRP policy may make it easier to get back a domain transferred fraudulently without a major expensive lawsuit.

It looks like Dotster does not lock domain names by default. At least not the ones that I bought through NameWinner.

I had to "order" (its free though) the locking to get it on my domains.

exactly, at that time, all of cnobin.com's domains will be locked automatically for security reason.

What about the 60 day new domain rule? Will that be affected by this?

The 60-day rule still applies.

Just a few hours left before the new rules take effect. Whatever happens, I
love you guys. :)

Here's a tip for those with more than a handful of domains:

- enter your .com/.net domains at http://freewho.com/checker/index.php

If a domain is locked, it will say "REGISTRAR-LOCK" under STATUS.

Anything else, such as "ACTIVE", means that you have to go in and check the lock.

Anyone know how to lock domains with dotster? I don't see that as an option.

Its a pain, but its possible. If you want to lock one, scroll down to a few options that say "Add Service". Click on the one by domain locking and it will check you out and charge you $0.00. If you do a few think that though it will tell you to a product before continuing.

To bulk lock domains, it will take at least 3 to 4 screens before you can finally do it.

Can anyone confirm for certain that this is true - and that it applies to .com only:
we all need to lock our domains? or else if your not careful anyone can run away with them!
