In my experience, you will have a hard time looking for jobs on the internet. At least for me it didn't really ever resulted in something nice.

I am somewhat in a similar position as yourself, I run my operations from Thailand. The way I do it is as follows: I started up this venture together with a some people in Europe who, more or less, act like account managers: they make the contacts, discuss the whole process and basicly do everything except for the technical part of the job.

At the moment, we are in a little over our heads; the work keeps coming in and I have a hard time finding decent developers. So we are also still looking for Asia based partner for web developement, if you're interested please PM me or email me at [email protected].

Mostly we develop sites/applications using a combination of Ajax (mostly Dojo and Sajax), PHP, XHTML and CSS. Since all of customers are European, the money is quite good!

best wishes,

-monty

I find people through forums for a start and then go by word of mouth.

Forums are a good way to build up a portfolio. Enter as many contests as you possibly can, and even if you don't win you can add your creations to your portfolio. You could even ask the intended client for feedback on your design which you could put alongside it in your portfolio.

The webdesign industry is over saturated, you will find huge amounts of designers online, but more often than not companies near your house (just take a walk down the street) don't muse the internet. Print some flyers and business cards and ask for a few minutes of their time or just ask to leave a business card with them.
Confidence is the key, and even if they don't buy into it they might pass it on to a friend.
Always carry business cards around with you, you never know who you might bump into and they could possibly be interested in your services.

Regards,
Jonny.
