Hi,

I am planning to learn how to use graphics tools, and acquire some graphics skills or knowledge. I'd like to get started during the Christmas break. What do you advise me to do? Get a book? Follow online tutorials? What program should I get? Photoshop or paint shop pro or any other?
My near goal is not to become an expert, but know how to do simple and clean designs.

Thanks in advance,
Aboujouj83

Hi aboujouj83,

I use Fireworks and a good site for tutorials is http://www.ultraweaver.com/

You can get a trial version of the program so you can try it out. Or at least you could before Adobe bought Macromedia. Have a look on the macromedia website or the adobe one.

HTH :)

Photoshop is the best IMO. Although it's expensive it is good if you want to become an expert. You may also consider GIMP which is free and open source.

The official website of GIMP www.gimp.org contains information about downloading, installing, using, and enhancing it.
Photoshop tutorials - www.retrotutorials.com, www.good-tutorials.com

definately get photoshop. Apart from the initial cost it is worth it. I do no recommend gimp one bit. Even though its free you can see why its free. Fireworks is ok but i just prefer photoshop. Many people use photoshop. Can you save to psd from firefox?

I think you may mean Fireworks. Surely it doesnt matter at all if you can save to psd?

Aboujouj83's initial question depends on if it's for print or for the web. If it's for print then PS is going to be the best. If it's for the web then Fireworks is the best as it's quicker to use and is better at image compression.

Aboujouj83 wanted something to learn. I can't even get my head round PS yet, so I thought, as a starting point Fireworks would be ideal.

Thanks for all the advice,
