I hope they know I love them... yeah, right!

Been reading about the Nebraska father who abandoned his 9 kids under the new Nebraska Safe Haven Law.

"I hope they know I love them.", he said.

Small comfort when you're in a foster home or orphanage..

Maybe he thinks he's doing the right thing but is he?

Seriously though...9 kids is crazy to handle yourself. It's imho impossible to do it without money. You can't work. 9 kids is easily a full-time job for one parent. I have 4 kids and they drive me nuts and it's not cheap. Add 5 to that...hell. Pure hell. I can't imagine what the father had to deal with.

Staton said his wife died early last year, shortly after delivering their youngest child. He said he quit his job because of his family responsibilities but couldn't pay rent or utilities or take care of his kids.

Seriously I am sure this dad isn't a bad dad just because of this action. He is trying to make sure they get fed and have a home.

You may be right.. I mean, I can't imagine giving up my kids for any reason. I just wonder what other avenues he exhausted before he took this step.

This is a double edge sword!!!

I would do anything for my kids, I have two and would beg for money just so they had food. On the other end, if I have to beg for money just so they can eat maybe living with me is not the best place for them.

This is a tough one...very emotional for a lot of people.

This is a very tough one... If only time would turn back. He shouldn't have fathered 9 kids knowing the responsibilities attached to it. He should've had considered practicality and stability that time. If he has nothing to feed his family, why make kids as many?

That's kind of where I'm coming from on this as well. i also think he could have gotten help from state agencies without having to give up his kids..

Glad I've never had to make a decision like that.

that's so sad.. giving up with your kids, but in that case, what else can you do? it's hard if you don't have enough money to feed them. not enough shelter to live in and keep 'em warm. poor kids and dad.

Hindsight would be a beautiful thing. Unfortunately life doesn't work like that. Anyone of us is simply one step away from going to the penthouse to the outhouse, and you simply cannot live your life wondering what might happen in the future to the extent that it paralyzes the present.

I tend to agree with labrocca. Nine would be pushing the boundaries of sanity, even on a good day...lol. I have four myself, one with special needs (Autistic) and, although hard at times, I never wish that we had maybe a couple less, in fact I would be completely and utterly lost without them.

Still, with the economy and outside forces making our lives a week by week proposition, I can understand where this poor man is coming from. Life with children is not cheap. With that many children, I can't even fathom it. At the end of the day...wouldn't you want the best for your children?

Luckily for me I can run on hugs and kisses for days. :bingo:

I have 8 kids, 6 girls, 2 boys. Both my sons have severe physical disabilities, the younger of the two boys has learning difficulties also. I love having so many kids, its loads of fun, although can be a lot of work.

I know I could look after my kids on my own and still work from home if the worst was to happen, also im sure my family would support me.

Even without that support I would try sooo hard never to be in a situation where I would have to give my kids up. I guess when it gets to a point that you are putting your children at risk, thats when you would need to make that decision, although I don;t know how anyone could.

A hard decision is right.. when it comes down to it you have to do what's right by your kids and hope for the best.

I take my hat off to you Adrian...You are a amazing individual to be able to cope with what you do.

I'm glad things went well with Ethan's surgery, and I wish Ethan, yourself, and the rest of your family nothing but the best.

Reading this all over makes me really sad... It's hard to give up your own flesh and blood but knowing life isn't stable..we should be predictable with the future. Not everyday is Christmas day.
