I am a newbie please respond to my question. Why do domain investors often purchase the same domain name in different extensions (like .net, .org, .xyz, etc.) even when the .com version already exists?

Thanks in Advance

Hi

most of those registrations could be seen as speculative, depending on the keywords.
single words like game, casino, sex, etc. will get registered in every extension, while some other words or phrases will have less.
it's the "hope" that the next buyer in these categories will choose one of their names, in a different extension, because the .com is either in use or the price is too high for most buyers.

having the alternative, with same keywords, is the prime motivator.

imo...

"domain investors often purchase the same domain name in different extensions" in my opinion they don't really do that, to say often purchase. Most domainers just own the domain in .com and don't buy the other extensions. If they do it's most likely to help beef up the .com value by having it taken in more extensions forcing a possible buyer to buy the .com from them.

I used to do this when I first started, there's a bigger risk and the renewal prices on those are usually higher and are less likely to sell.

Is not there any trademark infringement issue if I register a domain name in another extension?

As long as the domain name uses generic keywords, it is not considered a violation or infringement . like one word "love" "dynamic" "house"
