I just got this email out of the blue.....

Hello,

I know of many domain names - all better than the ones listed on your site currently. Do you have the financial backing to enter a partnership (or interest)if you agree with the names I have and sign a non-disclosure and then a contract?

I'm not trying to blow smoke - but every name should get at least 4 figures.
Thanks,
XXXXXXX
Chicago, IL

The mail came to my administrative email for tl-domain.com.

I did reply to it with the attempt to get as much information as possible without providing any of my information to try and determine if this is a scam or not.

Maybe someone else has recieved this email or has further information they could provide or a point of view on this email.

-Thank you for your time.

That does not look too good to me - it is very unclear what he is proposing - an ownership partnership? With a stranger, of domains of his choosing, where you would need fiancial backing?

Well, he had your name and email from whois so there is no danger in talking to him, I guess, but I would be very wary. If he wanted to sell domains it seems he would have said so.

By the way, if he wants you to receive some money for him, and then take a commission and send him the rest, be assured that it is a scam. If he wants you to buy an appraisal == scam.

My scam meter reads about 80/100.

The email seems confused, I gather it is asking if you want to put up money to enter into a partnership to buy/sell domains?

But it only says "I know of", not "I have", so I deduce that they want you to put up money to buy the domains they "know of".

Unclear english + implying that you will make money + asking if you have money = smells like scam

Even if it is real, would you ever enter into a business partnership with someone who cannot compose a clearly understandable email? How will they actually sell the domains which they buy with your money? ;)

I would say so.... There are so many scams out there. If you have to ask is this a scam it probably is. :(

It's a scam - stay away.

And they start off a "partnership" with a disparaging comment towards your site?

Nah, don't give them a second thought, :imho:
