I see alot of appraisals on some domain names that are just really UGLY but yet they get an appraisal of mid xxx and high xxxx and I'm thinking how can someone buy a domain name that is just plain UGLY.

What do you think?

.US domains.US domains
there are other factors that play a role: content, traffic, brand, potential to name a few :)

does not matter about ugly, its all about the money they can make from it.

can you give a couple of examples of domains you think are ugly? then we can discuss aesthetics.

Keep your eye on the domain name market, and keep coming to namepros.com and other sites, reading posts of domain names and domain name sales and you will understand.

You need to really watch the market to really understand why they are of so much value to a company or individual. I was baffled when I first started with domain names, but now I can clearly see why they are of so much worth!

With so many good domain names being hogged by people who are unwi8lling to budge, some domain names need to be values on other factor such as key words, traffic and revenue from the name. Also a developed website can be of some worth for the design, number of members etc. etc.

If you are not fully "with" the domain market, you may not see their worth because you actually don't know the market!

Purhaps if you could point us to a specific appraisal then we could also help you find out some more about it and why it may be worth the ammount that was said.

Thanks everyone! and Thank YOU JIBLOB for that explaination!!!

To answer MARTIN & YOSH's questions.

To understand this correctly. I'll use my domain for an example.

This is the domain that I find really ugly (domains like this) freeringtonesdownload.com << I find this UGLY compared to something like my domain (nychat.net) What I am trying to understand how an ugly domain have potential and MARTIN & JIBLOB answered my question there.

Thank again!!!

I share the same feeling as Nightlinks, and would like to learn more about the domain name market. Is there any good resources you could recommend? Or is the best information to be found right here and on other forums?

There are simply no end for domains. As long as a domain is not taken, it has potentials! (Well it's a personal opinion). I would take every domain (undeveloped) there is if I weren't on a budget :)

The main appraisal is when you meet a buyer and how much he/she wishes to pay for your domain. This is the only point.

NY Chat <<<--VS--->>> Free RingTones Download

No comparision really for values
Millions of Ringtones downloaded annually + .com
versus How many looking for Chatting in New York? +.net

Why would you describe a KeyWord Rich name "UGLY"
Versus a name like "nychat" that appears to be a random collection of characters, if you didn't realise that NY was Acronym for New York,

I both agree and disagree with what you people are saying. I am new to the domain market, and I have seen plenty of domains that are "UGLY" that can earn money. I believe these "UGLY" domains are actually worth something if they are keyword rich, but if they are too long, it is a hassle for viewers and may get annoying.

Now cause ringtones are a hit now but Chat people has been chatting for as long as I can remember.

When i made the comparison I was talking about how long the 2 are (characters).

sometimes a long 4/5 word domain name can completely contain all the information required to describe a website service, so freeringtonedownload may look clunky but appeal to an end user who wants to set up a commercial service ie buy 1 get 1 free! and might spend several hundred dollars as opposed to the 100np if offered for sale in the np forums. There is no magic algorithm, but a sense of the business around the name being considered is useful.

You're seeing these values because people most of the time overvalue the names. Mr. Tomich had stated a term of "premiumitis" or something like the such and it involves newbies overvaluing their names, thinking that they have hit the next "sex.com" or "business.com"

Obviously, there is some good advice and insight above that you have probably read if you're reading this right now. Value, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholer.

More traffic
More Revenue
More contents

Will make the name brandable and will start to gain value.

I hate UGLY Domains myself and I'm also not a big fan of made up .nets but if they have built in traffic for one reason or another well they would obviously hold some value.

If it was just a plain old domain with no traffic/history, I wouldnt reg it for development purposes, I'd be too embarressed to say I owned it. Come to think of it I prob. own a few UGLY domains myself and when the time comes they will be dropped...

One of my first domains that I bought was pretty ugly. I just needed it at the time.

BayAreaOnSale.com

I paid top dollars for it before I knew much about the biz. So there's hope. You just have to find the right buyer. Key is to get your domains out there. EVERYWHERE.
