They certainly will lag behind non-hyphenated names (in terms of domain name valuation) although that doesn't mean you can't properly SEO and monetize a hyphenated name.

It's generally accepted amongst many domainers that a hyphenated name is weaker compared to the non-hyphenated version since many users will instinctively type the name without the hyphen.

That being said, our SEO experience with a few cases has shown that it is quite doable to properly SEO a site with a hyphenated term. Keep in mind that even in 2009; content is king.

Of course, if you are competing with a dev'd site that has the non-hyphenated version *and* has relevant and hot content... you've got a tough challenge ahead of you.

:) hope this helps somewhat.

Rob

p.s. although this isn't the appraisal forum, I would say that your name is medium level... good keywords, but together I'm not so convinced that they make for a Tier 1 name.

I have a ton of hyphened names and all seem to do well. Most people find my sites through searches and hyphened domains are much easier to read. One particular hyphened domain that has done well for 18 months is also a .info.

If you type 'obama mccain' or mccain obama' in google, we still come up first (for over a year). It only gets a couple hundred visitors a day now but on the day before the election I had 1.2 million.

Hyphenated domains have good value, but they need to be strong keywords. Unfortunately "Airline Fare" is not. It only gets 5400 exact searches/month which is not much.

While the plural would be better, there are far better terms like Airline-Tickets.com. Plus most people use the term "Airfare" not "Airline Fare"

Seems I'll being taken into a deeper virtual world - domaining world. Have been said but how long will this hyphenated names will take to catch up with non-hyphenated names or it will be like this for quite a time to come.

Thanks,

Hyphenated names will never be worth what the non hyphen names are worth

I own about 50 hyphen names and just got a bite for my site Tax-Savings,ca yes I own Tax-Saving,ca as well :)
and other tax, mortgage, insurance hyphen names i think they fit nice, sometimes

In a World where LLLL.coms are dropping like commercial puddle jumpers with iced wings and rookie pilots, I suggest you avoid hyphenated domains like a hypochondriac avoiding Mexico City during the peak of the upcoming flu season. IMO.

They work best with true keywords with search volume and competition.

They have always sold quite poorly, think 1% of the value of the non hyphen. Really only useful for seo purposes only. For branding and memorability they are a poor choice.

When most non-hyphenated words and terms are forced to use a hyphen just to function as a domain, most of the hyphenated domains lose value. However, naturally hyphenated words and terms seem to do okay as domains, probably because of natural traffic.
