Hurricane Sandy...

My hubby and I are in the direct projected track of Hurricane Sandy (Pennsylvania).

It could be a repeat of Hurricane Agnes (1972), with lots of flooding and high winds. Our house, fortunately, is not in flood area, but it is expected that millions will lose power.

We never got groceries after England, so our freezer is pretty spare right now, which is a good thing.

We'll spend tomorrow getting ready for the storm, filling water jugs and buying non-perishables. It is expected that we will lose power for days.

I just hope that we will still be able to cast our votes on November 6. No early voting in Pennsylvania.

Anyone else in the path of Randy Sandy?

Maybe we'll get lucky and she will turn out to sea...

I'm in northern NJ, surrounded by trees. High winds scare the **** out of me. I've had some close calls in the past, like the 70' tree that snapped in half and missed the house by about 4' when it landed. I'd feel better if there weren't so many leaves still on trees - lots of big branches down last year in "SnowTober."

On the plus side, even though I'm near water, my house is up high, on a hill, and has no underground water sources so it never floods. Irene, Floyd ... not a drop. People down the street from me on low ground always get hit badly - "indoor swimming pools" on the ground floor.

I broke down and bought a generator - hopefully will get here in time!

Went to the store last night - they were already wiped out of D batteries and the usual bread-milk-water. Lines at the ATM, lines at the gas station.

I'm also clearing out the fridge and freezer, filling containers with water and making ice blocks out of them. Saving grace here in power outages - I have a gas stove with a gas pilot. I always have coffee and warm food.

We must have a few people in NYC too?

One of my advertising clients is a certified water / mold removal company. I expect he'll be busy!

Hang in there, njsurfer and Ms. Domainer and stay safe!

Thanks, everyone.

Please stay safe, New Jersey and other coastal friends; you guys are more vulnerable than we inlanders. Please, please, please evacuate when your officials tell you to. Those projected storm surges really sound scary. Lives are more important than "stuff."

We spent yesterday getting non-perishables and water. D batteries have been sold out since Friday. We have lots of candles and flashlights and a wind up radio. We also have a small 23-year-old shortwave radio that works well (We bought it in 1988, just before moving to Yugoslavia for a year, where there was no internet or English-speaking stations).

With help, we cleared the yard of branches and firewood (created from a shed project).

Today, I'm doing laundry. That way, we can start fresh, in case we're off the grid. At this point, I'm more worried about the power being out on voting day...

The local weather people are saying that we could get 60 mph winds, so I'm about 99% certain we will lose power for an extended time (despite the fact that we live about 1/4 mile from Met-ed headquarters).

Anyway, stay safe, everyone!

Just finished taking in everything I could from outside. Don't need any of them going through a window.

D batteries gone since Friday here too. I have a little MP3/radio that takes 1AA battery so I grabbed more of those. Generator isn't scheduled to arrive until mid-week - which may not be completely bad timing. If we get 60-70mph gusts and 40mph sustained winds, we could be in for a long power outage :(.

NYC is closing city bridges at 7PM tonight and has ordered evacuations of low-lying parts of the city.

I'm going to do some laundry too...

-------------------
PS - Amazon ROCKS! They shipped my generator last night, free upgrade to overnight shipping! (It was 2 day Prime) It's scheduled to be delivered this AM. Now hoping I can still buy gas somewhere.

Wind gusts are picking up now, and I expect to lose power at any time now.

This may be my last post for a while, so I just want to take this opportunity to say "Keep safe, everyone in the path of Sandy."

Best to all!

Ms D.

I'm still on the grid.

I have charged up our phones and Kindle and have ordered an e-book.

We'll get the brunt of the storm sometime tonight, although it's already raining pretty hard and it's somewhat gusty.

We have some big trees that might prove to be problematic; we're trying to stay in the area of the house furthest away from them, just in case.

Atlantic City is getting hit really hard right now, so my thoughts are with our South Jersey friends and everyone else in the storm area.

See you all after the storm!

I am hearing 3 feet of water outside New York Stock Exchange.

Still have power here - for now -

We've been getting hit with high winds and higher gusts for hours now. Lots of tree damage. Transformers arcing all over the place. Wind is changing direction, supposed to start to taper off soon.

I'm not in a flood area, but it's really, really bad for those on the coast. NY East River subways are flooded, the Hudson River was pouring into Jersey City ... really bad.

Just watched video from NY. Awful!

Stay safe guys!

We never lost our power, although our lights flickered a few times.

Whew!

Our governor told us that we're not out of the woods yets, for more trees could topple due to ground saturation. We have a large tree in our backyard that concerns me. Once this storm is over and the ground is hard again, I think we'll get it trimmed back.

Also, I'm keeping the frozen water jugs for now.

Are any others in the path of Sandy back on the grid?

Enlytend, I'm especially thinking of you; it must have been a rough night for you.

Our power went out at about 10:30pm last night but luckily it came back on this morning at about 11.

** Glad you guys kept power most of the time ** :hearts:

Watching it on CNN is nothing compared to those going through it,
but fingers crossed it goes the rest of the way out without anymore
issues or injuries.
