HTML Validation

OK. I put "html checker" into google search. The first three validators listed were...

1) htmlvalidator.com
2) WC3 HTML Validation Service
3) netmechanic.com

So I thought I try all these top three I managed to validate in 1 & 2. However. Net Mechanic is telling me that <br />, <img ... />, <link ... />, <meta .../> are incompatible with 99% of all browsers. When HTML Validator insisted I put these / in. What say you?

OK. Thanks guys. I'll use htmlvalidator.com and validator.w3.org from now on. They picked up on a couple of different things (iirc).
