How websites make money.

Hi all,

This is really a business question I guess.

I was looking at the web100 website which lists the best 100 websites and with some sites such as whatis.com I was wondering how they make their money.

I mean everything on that particular site seems to be free and as with many others there doesn't seem to be anything for sale at all. Even membership is free.

With a site such as google, how have the owners become millionares. I mean Google has the adsense things on it. Is this the only way that it makes money?

Please can someone explain this stuff to me?

Well a lot of the times there are businesses that pay booku bucks to advertise on your site. There are also somethings that are a paid fee for a year or such. Take Google for instance...

People pay a buttload of $ to adsense to get their ads on other peoples sites and to get ads on Google searches that are relevant to their product/company name. That is how Google makes a ton.

Yup - google, by being such a great search engine and offering so many free services, gets tons and tons of traffic. Therefore, they are prime real estate for advertising.

I think pretty much all these free sites just build up a massive user base, getting tons of traffic, and then charge up the wazzooo to advertisers. Some may have external ventures, such as subscription magazines or consulting.

yep the adsense system google has has made the owner not millionaires but billionaires. They take a cut from if you have it on your site as well.

Advertisement is how they make money. Google make billions of dollars by charging people to advertise. Same for Yahoo and countless of other websites.

You can make tons of money if you have a website with high traffic. If you have a popular website and you offer Google adsense, you can make $1000s a month.

leviathon 5digit is possible ( I know a 4 digit person myself, but he isn't letting me in on all the tips )

if you have alot of sites which are working really well, you can make alot from it! Just first make a site you love, and get visitors etc, then stick up the ad's and see how it's going!

well anyone can do it, if they just work work work! If you work ALOT and read alot etc, you will reach your goal. If you think oh I will probably never make that, then you aren't even earning it! You have to want it, in order to get it!

So do most sites that make money through advertising get paid a monthly fee by the advertiser or something?

Or, do they get a small fee every time a user clicks on one of the ads?

Depends. If they use Google adsense they get paid for each click...
