How to successfully purchase a domain

Hi,
I'm new and I'd love some guidance please. I'm interested in a domain name listed with Sedo and no price information.

I offered $60 and the owner countered with $950!

It's not a website, there's no traffic. It's not a great name, just something that will work with a concept I have.

Should I just move on and find something else or is this standard opening banter? I'm willing to spend a little bit more, but don't want to look like I don't know what I'm doing...(but I really don't know what I'm doing!)

Should I counter a little bit higher? Should I give my top amount ($120) as my next bid? Or, should I believe that the guy really thinks the name is worth $950 and move on?

By the way, I ran the name in Valuate.com and it came back with a ZERO valuation.

Thanks so much!
Betty

Just make your best offer. If it works that's great, if not , move on.

$60 is the minimum offer you can submit at Sedo. And since Sedo levies a commission of $50 minimum, the seller would be left with $10 net... That is regfee. And if the domain was acquired at a premium price and/or renewed for several years, then the holder would be selling at a loss.
Of course, there is no point accepting such a low offer.
It can only be a way to start the ball rolling.
Now only you can determine what the domain is worth in your eyes. The right price is probably somewhere between $60 and $950.

Try contacting the owner though the WHOIS, (go to whois.com, type in the name, click on the 'whois' tab next to it, and contact them via their email). You'll probably have to offer more than what you'd like to get it for, $300-$500 is the least most domainers are willing to sell a domain for.

just go with your best and final offer, let the owner of the domain know it somehow.
if owner insists on same price, then just let it go.

Really appreciate your help!

Thanks all. I'm going to place my counter offer. (I checked whois and it actually lists SEDO as the owner.)

I may not get this one, but I've learned a bunch, thanks to your input.

Much appreciated! Thanks!
