How to optimise a VPS for a proxy?

I'm starting a proxy (running on phproxy) and I've invested into a VPS for it.

My question is thus; how do you optimise a VPS for speed and uptime whilst running a proxy?

I'm running webmin, and I have root. Its CentOS.
