How to Lease a Domain?

Hello,

I am kind of new to the domain business. If I want to lease a domain, how could I do so but still retain ownership of it and let someone host a website on my domain and market it?

I haven't done it yet, but I imagine you simply point the name to their name servers, and keep it going as long as the payments come in.

No matter what you do, make sure you have a legal agreement in place that outlines all the terms, and accounts for all discrepancies. For example, you don't want to deal with an issue where they missed a payment, you shut down the site, and now their coming at you for their loss of business...

I'm interested in domain rentals myself, hopefully someone more knowledgable can offer some input.

Assuming that this name is something valuable, I would think that if you plan to "retain" its ownership... as in long-term ownership? Chances are your potential lessee would rather find a name they'd actually own in the later run. A question to ask is why would they want to put a branding on something someone else owns in which that owner isn't actively participating.

Otherwise, it's mostly a matter of registering your name, listing it as rent-to-own and in the event you find a suitable lessee, changing your domain's default nameservers to their webhost's nameservers - all on top of figuring out what your Lease Agreement stipulates.

Actually I've also thought about this setup and have been able to gather a few sites with this model. Mark.com for example is one and you can always check out their FAQ and Agreement sections at the bottom. I'm currently not using any service as this but it's always nice to have some ideas.

escrow.com now provides for financing. I have yet to use it, but Id have to imagine itd take the headache out it all. Leasing a name to a buyer, takes far longer to set up than a sale. Let someone else handle it and eat the fees.
