How to get a better .com renewal rate than $35 per year from GoDaddy?

I have a .com with GoDaddy that I'd like to renew. This domain has privacy enabled. They want $20 for the renewal, and $15 for the privacy.

Any techniques to get this a bit more reasonable?

I would just transfer out and use one of the registrars that charges around $10 per year for .com + privacy, but I don't want to have to disable privacy in order to transfer it.

I'm hoping there's a way to get even a remotely reasonable price through GoDaddy, any advice? I know I'll end up paying more than NameSilo or NameCheap, but paying 3.5x the price feels like a bit too much.

(Please note this is in CAD, if it the price seems a bit higher than you're used to.)

Move to a new registrar. Don't feed the beast

Move it to namesilo.com, you will not regret.

It will take just 20 minutes to transfer out. Disable whois privacy first and then start transfer. When it is started, you will receive approval emails from namesilo and Godaddy, login to your account and approve the transfer. it will be there in less than 30 minutes.

So removing privacy for just 30 minutes isn't long if you can.

Not worth it to join the club, I only have one domain with them and I actively avoid having any more there because of the high renewal and privacy prices.

Agreed, Namesilo is your answer IMO, use the min two step auth too.

We can't speak for the GoDaddy side of things (in terms of accessing the authorization code when the privacy is active) but I can confirm that you can transfer a domain to Dynadot whilst the privacy is still active.

We also made our domain privacy free to all customers in September 2017, for all TLDs that support privacy, and the privacy service is free with your renewals too so there's no extra cost for domain privacy with ourselves.

So NameSilo is good?

Yep. A full service Registrar where every extra is free. I don't care much for their interface... very 20th Century. But every interaction I've had with them has been excellent.

To answer your actual question versus offer alternative registrars: if you have only one or very few domains, the only way to get a deal at GDiddy is to be willing to extend the domain out a long time - and get on the phone with them to ask for some kind of discount in exchange for this long term action.

The more domains you have and the longer out you’re willing to extend them the more leverage you’ll have at GD to get a higher discount. My rate at DynaDot is just over eight dollars for dot com but with negotiation I’ve gotten GDiddy to pretty close to that same rate. (However, note that at DD privacy is free - at GD it is not so no matter what you’ll end up paying more at GD if you need privacy.)

Finally, note that: I’ve transferred domains out of GD without dropping the privacy.

Hi stub. I dunno, I just transferred a domain from GD to DD, that had privacy enabled before during and after the transfer I didn't do anything special. Just unlocked the domain at GD, got the transfer/auth code, entered it at DD and paid for the transfer, and about a week later it arrived at DD.
A week!!!??? Godaddy has an expedited transfer approval option that makes it possible to complete transfer under 1 hour

Agree. It's about 15 minutes or less most of the time.

I didn’t do anything special. It transferred in due course but also I didn’t have to remove privacy at any point. I didn’t really think about it since the system never prompted me to remove the privacy.

Maybe it has to do with that the receiving registrar (in this case DynaDot) accepts incoming domains with privacy enabled?

As far as the settings on the incoming transfer I “paid” (0.00 - so, no fee) for privacy on the one year renewal (extension) at DynaDot at the same time as the transfer in order.

Hi. The auth code arrives at the email address (my email address) that is underneath the privacy.

OK. I now see how it is possible to transfer a domain away from GoDaddy without removing the privacy. I but I don't understand why it takes a week with privacy and 15 minutes without privacy.

@Dynadot - Well you could have mailing lists which we could join to arranged by subject. You are probably doing this already. But I never got that email. Which happens a lot. IMHO. I don't even know where to look for this extensive list of subjects. I would definitely have subscribed to receive those notices. It "feels" like you don't want us to subscribe to these emails. They should all in one place and easy to find. IMHO.

Thank you, I think that's a great idea and I've passed the suggestion on to our team to have the option to subscribe to newsletters and updates within certain subjects or categories. We always want to be as clear and transparent as possible, so we definitely want our customers to be aware of any policy or feature changes that may occur in future.

Move to Namecheap or NameSilo.

NameBright has free privacy will give you the cheapest prices on the planet at $8.03/com. NameSilo pricing is a bit complex but is usually between $8-9 with everything is free. You need to read the small print to fully understand what you are buying.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but isn't whois privacy free for all domains/registrars now that GDPR is in place?

I don't think so. Because it's for ownly European businesses which are affected by GDRP. If you are outside the Europepan Union, then you are just collateral damage if your private address is not displayed. So pick your registrar carefully. If you are concerned about this.

For .com it's $8.39 for transfer and $8.99 for renewal, straight forward. Plus you can enable afternic fast transfer. They have their own marketplace with 7.5% commissions and payout via Bitcoin, PayPal or wire. No cost for payout via Bitcoin or wire.

Most European registrars have redacted the info and we can contact the owner using contact form, example register.it and lcn.com.

While some other registrars have made it free, like Namecheap.com and dynadot.com. It wasn't free on these registrars before.

Have NameSilo discontinued their discounts depending in the number of domains you have in any TLD?
