Hey everyone,

I need some advice:

I own a set of .in domains that are very valuable to a USD 20mn company in India. I have had USD 50 offers on each of the domains multiple times in the recent past, but I think its for its generic value and not the brand value. Infact, one of the domain I lost to renewal and bought it for USD 150 on sedo again last year.

The company is into B2B and B2C biz and uses atleast 4-5 domains for business. The corporate email address is actually a four word .com. I own the first word in .in/.co.in

Now, this company is not well known, but I happened to be introduced to the CEO by a friend and ex-boss (who is currently CEO of a very large global company).

I then wrote to the CEO of the company I have the domain of thru the friend to check if they are interested in buying the domain. I get a response back within a few hours that they are very interested in buying the domain and bought a 2word similar .in, but my name sounds terrific.

Now my question is, what is the price I can ask for keeping in mind I made the offer to sell first. What could be my response to the prospective buyer - Can I ask him for a price in his mind, if yes, how could I word it nicely that both entices response as well as gets me a good deal?

There is hardly any other end user I can think of for the domain other than them. It is perfect for them. Its like owning sony.in when your end user is Sony-Ericsson ;)

maybe seek reasonable offer form them without going first, that ways you would know what price they'd be willing to spend and somehow make sure you get paid in USD's for better offer :D

Let's see what other have to say on this, good luck!!

Some of these end users can be very frustrating. They are clueless about the value of a .com vs their inferior tld, but still engage you. You end up wasting time with them.

I get stuck in this black hole of back and forth emails with potential buyers. 15 emails back and forth and still no sale. lol I don't know how to extricate myself. I think it's a conspiracy to waste my time, but the emails they seem so convincing. It's always "another thing", always something except a "yes I want to buy and I'm ready to pay".

Shut down the negotiation, get a sale or walk away.

"I have other offers pending, since it was offered to you first, I can allow you three working days to either accept or decline, after which I'll take up one of the others."

Should work, a sales process without a sale is sheer waste of time. And setting a deadline will let you know what it is either way.

Tell them that you are not going to negotiate anymore with their excuses and timewasting and turn around and sell it to a competitor.

There is always going to come a point in every negotiation when you have to play it softly or take the hard line, if you don't choose now you will still be dancing in 6 months.

Ask them directly if they wish to buy or not, if no then say "Goodbye" and terminate all contact with them.

At least you have got a list of questions and objections that you can better anticipate next time so it is not all a waste.

Always make sure the "desperation meter" is "ON" on the buyers side. The more you negotiate and engage in the convincing or sales game, the "desperation meter" bounces on your side.

Never feel badly about losing a sale. You must know your domain's worth. Compromise by a little, if need be. Set a time-line.

Always be in control. Right to the end.

The last thing you must do is make a buyer feel like he/she did you a favor by buying your name.

Massive companies like Microsoft / Sharp / etc. are virtually impossible to get a hold of a decision maker.

* Keep all of your sent emails, followup and lower your asking price.
If no response after 3 weeks, move on.

* If you think you've found the perfect end user...THEN CALL THEM! Dont
just email them.

* Stay abreast of current trends. Follow the market and acquire the types of domains which are selling.

* Try this trick I used last week that landed a big

Sometimes I get responses where I'm not sure what has happened. I sent a regular pitch (without a price) and the reply I got was: "Yes, I'll take 200 for it." That's all the reply was.

The reply is non-sequitur. The domain I'm selling is the .com version of the .net.

A part of me sees it as a veiled FU. Do I just ask for clarification?
