I just had an enduser ask for my tax id number, after they purchased some domains from me (they are sending me a check)?

I have never had this happen in all of my enduser sales, is this normal(I do have one, though)? Is it unsafe for me to be sending out my Federal Employee ID Number (EIN) or is there anything I should be concerned about here?

I'm in the United States by the way.

That's an example of the type of situations that may happen and that are related to the way one presents himself to the potential buyer. Do you fabricate a company name (i see that in the US it's very easy to open a business) and in that case what happens if the buyer requests a receipt or other form of identification? If you present yourself as an individual will a company of a bigger size do business with you?

:?

Thanks tonecas. I just sent them my FEIN number anyway. Typically I am only asked to provide that info when I am buying wholesale from someone or on my tax forms, which is why I asked.

I always present myself as an individual, which is probably not the best. But I am an actual business and I do have all the proper paperwork etc, if someone wants it. So far, it has not hindered my enduser sales too much in my opinion, but I might start presenting myself a little differently in the future.

maybe they wanna put that purchase in books, and claim tax benefits for the payment sent your way for the domain purchase..

whois v main site

Hi

Some really great topics and info here guys thanks keep up the good work:)

My questions are: When going through whois to look for "potential end users" if there is no email address to contact anybody should you go to the main site and use the contact form? If so what do I post in the form with regards to trying to sell a domain.

Also am I not better off asking for the registrant of that domain/website?
when going though the main site and the contact addy is eg [email protected] should I ask for the "marketing/advertising" department or put for the attention of marketing/advertising?

I have found many admin and tech email addresses are with [email protected] or [email protected] ect ect. Is it worth sending an email to these?

I am new to this so do not want to give the wrong impression. And sorry for so many questions
there's alot more to domaining than I thought:lol: but we live and learn;)

Thanks

No, the chance that they will forward your e-mail to the appropriate contact is close to 0% As good as any other e-mail addr or contact form will give you a better chance of reaching the right person. Depending on how much time you want to use on a given site, you can go through the site looking for contact information and use search engines to search for contact info for key people, marketing departments etc. for that specific company.

I don't think it hurts. I've generated quite a few sales where I was only able to make contact through their website contact form. If it's a small business chances are the owner might get your email. In addition, I've had many instances where the person checking the contact form either forwarded my email to the appropriate person or checked with that person to find out if they were interested. It takes less then 10 seconds to copy and paste your letter, if you already have it typed up. I mean it can't hurt.

Thanks

First Question: I put "Question About XYZ.com" or "XYZ.com Website Question". I don't put anything else in the subject unless I know the persons name specifically.

Second Question: Where 98 or 99 percent of the time those tech emails are useless, I've closed a few deals and generated some interest sending emails to the tech emails. You will notice a pattern with some tech/admin emails where you see them over and over again in the whois and in general for the most part they are useless. However some companies have firms such as SEO/Webmarketing firms working for them and so they list the tech emails of those firms. And in some cases those firms I have found are interested in purchasing the domain for the client as they feel it will help their clients internet marketing efforts. Where in general these emails are useless, it takes only 10 seconds to bcc another email address into your email.

In the concrete example, dagsta is referring to [email protected] According to domaintools.com [email protected] is associated with about 132.272 domains. I highly doubt any mail sent to this address will be forwarded. I guess the chance that your smtp server rather will end up on a spam list is higher than your mail is forwarded to the right contact person :)

I do ignore tech emails like the above mentioned ones which is sort of what I meant to say but poorly phrased when I said,"You will notice a pattern with some tech/admin emails where you see them over and over again in the whois and in general for the most part they are useless."

That being said I have experienced success contacting some targeted tech emails where they look like, for example, the businesses Internet Marketing company. If you don't want to contact them because you think you will end up on a spam list or you don't want to contact endusers through onsite contact forms, be my guest, I was just providing advice on what has worked for me. :)

Obviously I was not referring to whois listings containing the "real" contact information for a company or using contact forms on websites. I am referring to whois listings holding the contact information of the domain registrar or ISP. If you read my posts above I actually write that it will be a better solution to use a contact form as opposed to contacting the domain registrar or ISP as they most likely not will forward a random sales approach to their client...

In the question by dagsta [email protected] is explicit mentioned as an example. This is the example I am commenting on...

Using the whois contact info for sending out domain offers is borderline spam (not saying it actually is spam).

Anyway lets get back on topic :)

And another problem of sending mass emails is the risk that your email address became blacklisted as spam.
Is better to ask to speak with the right person, instead of sending directly the emails (sure, is a little time consuming but you avoid future problems).

In terms of avoiding getting blacklisted as spam, is there some way to get around that? Is it possible to get a verified IP address or verified email address or something?

Try this search on Google: email blacklist
You will find some tools and solutions.

I think the best way to avoid the blacklists is: do not send mass emails to people you don't know.
Simple and effective.

While offering domain name to an enduser I've got very creative reply from him :)

"Do you want to trade it for Leavemealone.fu?"

It is the reply to my first e-mail.
