I have not tried it but many others have and most seem to claim a lack of results.

I'm happy to say I just completed my first end user sale off Craigslist. It is funny how it worked the exact same as when I usually email end users. I posted it for $400, got a $200 counter offer, and accepted it :)

I did not even think about the violation of links. I did not post any actual clickable links in the thread, just the DomainName.com like that. I am going to have to re-read their TOS and probably won't post anymore if that is in fact against their TOS. I already removed the posting once the name was sold but I posted in the For Sale - Business/Commercial section. The name I sold was a brandable TwoWord.com. Thanks for the heads up on the TOS thing, I am going to take a glance at that right now.

Thanks for the info.
I might give this a try myself.
However, I am not familiar with Craigslist.
You can list it only local, right?
Can you choose your own local region?
I am guessing biggest population should be better?

Correct. It doesn't have to be your area, it can be anywhere..but I would suggest posting only in bigger cities. I managed to sell my name to someone who lived in the same city as myself (Houston)...You may want to try posting it in a few different big cities like Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Orlando...etc. CL always uses like cityname.craigslist.org (ie: houston.craigslist.org, chicago.craigslist.org..etc) Hope this helps and best of luck!

Inspired by "FPForum", I just listed one domain at Craigslist.
Let's see how it goes ;)

It's pity that I can do one list every 48 hours :(

I sold a domain a couple months back on Craigslist ($60 for a .org). It's free, so it's hard to go wrong.

Question...What do you do when you have 2 interested parties going after the domain. they both asked price and I shot back...One "for sure" wants it (his words) but wants to wait till wednesday. the other has not responded back to my offer but if he does and says wants it now what do i do to the first party?

I dont want to be dishonest as im "holding" the domain now for a sale but whats to say on wednesday he comes back and says forget it and then I may have lost 2 sales....what to do??

Since the first party "for sure" wants it, just send a quick e-mail to the 2nd party saying something like "Actually, put that offer on hold for a bit. Let me get back to you.", and don't initiate contact with him/her after that. If he/she later later e-mails you asking "what's the deal with XYZ.com?", just explain you decided to take the domain off the market temporarily because you realize you have already fulfilled your financial expectations for the quarter, but will definitely let him/her know once the domain becomes available again.

Sell the domain to party #1 on Wednesday. If they decide to delay the transaction by any more than two weeks and party #2 says "yes" within that frame, sell ot party #2.

AAARRGGHH.....Let me ask the others here. Dont you hate when end users say they will come through and they dont! had 2 this week so far...

1. Selling for $750...enduser said GREAT just hold till wedensday (2 days) so I did....emailed on Friday when heard nothing....then again this morning and he said he changed offices and is no longer intersted..

2. Selling for $175..been in escrow for 7 days tomorrow. Emailed me a few days ago to say sorry due to family health problems and all...I accept that but also the same time frame it took to email me he cld just sign in to accept and pay?

Then i got a reply to one of my emails I sent last week finally asking how much....man you would think everyone was on a time frame here LOL

Have you have any other stories like these that maybe turned positive?

  • Agreed on $8K sale - buyer from Dubai. Buyer even called from Dubai and was very happy, but, never completed the deal.
  • Agreed on $13K sale - buyer really wanted the domain and was happy to get it, but, never completed the deal.
  • Agreed on $2K sale - same story as above.
Too many to remember them all.

I've had a lot of potential buyer's that after emailing them and then they email me back requesting a price I never hear from them again. Most of my price proposals I send out are in the 400 to 500 dollar range, so it is not like they are really high. I would at least expect for someone to counter offer if they were really interested.

Is this type of thing normal as well?

Very normal for me.

That usually signals a good time to call your prospect. Present your reasoning for your asking price, stats, backlinks, or a keyword relevance. Also inform them that you have other candidates for your particular domain and that you contacted them again because you want to "close" out the current transaction before moving forward with other prospects.

Hope that helps a little.

I did advise of another offer with the sale for $750 (which is true as another email I sent for the name got a request for "how much" but still turned down.

I never count my chickens before they hatch but it is nice knowing you may have some funds coming in.
