Hello guys,

I'm new to web design, but I'm eager to learn and experiment with various templates.

I downloaded a few templates from oswd.org. I get a rar file, when extracted i get the web page as an html document, with pictures attached in a folder.

What program do I use to edit this page to add the content I want?
And once thats done how do I upload an entire web page with attached sub-pages to the internet?

I know these are noob questions, but I'm trying to learn my way around this. thanks for any help!

hey,

you can use notepad to edit the files, or you can get dreamweaver (a WYSIWYG editor).

then to upload them, you need hosting, and you use an ftp client to do that (such as smart ftp, or dreamweaver, if you got it)

hope that helps :)

I've opened the files with dreamweaver, but there only appears to be a main page that i can manipulate. For example, links like "Contact Info" and so forth that would link to other pages don't seem to have anything to link to.

Does this mean I have to create the other pages myself?thanks for any help

Are you trying to edit the images as well?

yeah, its just a standard template from oswd.org

I'm not sure why they wouldn't include follow up pages, like supplementary pages that the links on the main page point to.

Sorry if this is noobish, but shouldn't the template come with the extra pages? Am I just unable to find them?

thanks

You can use notepad, but notepad is for experienced programmers. I would suggest first starting out with Macromedia Dreamweaver MX, then working your way up.

You need to do the following:

1. Edit the index.html file so that all of the links are as you wish them to be (point them to files called links.html / about.html etc...).

2, Save the index.html file

3. Then, with the index file go to File > Save As > and save different files called links.html / about.html to the same folder as as the index.html file

4. You will now have different files and can edit them as you need.

I hope this helps

Also, FYI most templates just have the index file so you get the layout html, you create all sub pages. Make sure to change links etc to however you wish them to look before creating sub pages.

Starting out with dreamweaver is no simple thing either as you have to learn the program AND how to code at the same time.

Try making simple edits with a text editor first - upload to your server and see the changes. Trial and error - the best way to learn. And because you are doing it by hand you learn the best. I also recommend notetab lite - http://www.notetab.com/ntl.php for a text editor on steriods for learning html - does xhtml, php etc as well. AND it's free.

You will probably need to know html to be able to edit oswd templates. Try w3schools.com

thanks for all the help guys.

I got dreamweaver, but i'm not foolish enough to think i can just dive right in.

SO i got the lynda training dvd that deals with dreamweaver. It teaches you the program etc through videos with voice over. I'm almost halfway through it, learning tons.

Heygeek, thanks for the tip. I'll delete the stuff I don't want, and be left withthe background which I can then create a new page around.
